I got into photography when I started travelling extensively. Having all these beautiful snapshots of places I have been, things I have seen, people I have met, fills me up with immense joy when I look back upon them. It is not all about great imagery but the memories and feelings that bubble inside of me.

It would be no surprise to anyone that my camera is one of my most prized possession. After I bought my first DSLR camera, I spent a lot of time researching on the best camera bags for travel.

It had to be lightweight yet padded to keep my precious baby safe from water, scratches or accidental drops. It had to have a good amount of compartments to keep all my lenses, yet all of which has to be easily accessible efficiently. These were some of the considerations that every photographer would have on their mind when looking for a bag to store their cameras.

Therefore, I have collated my whole thought process into this post right here, which hopefully will help you make the right camera bag decision to store your camera.

What to consider when buying a travel camera bag?

1. How much equipment you have

Firstly, think about how much equipment would you like to bring while traveling. This would help you narrow down to the type of bag, whether it is a hiking camera backpack or just a compact camera shoulder bag or a messenger bag.

2. Size, weight and material

Next, we are looking for a lightweight bag that can fit everything we need and comfortable to carry. Most camera bags are canvas because it is durable, quite waterproof and lightweight, but make sure that each pocket is also heavily padded for protection.

A camera bag definitely has to be water resistant / waterproof or comes with a rain cover.

3. Ease of accessibility

A very important factor to consider is how this bag aids you in crafting an easy and efficient experience while you shoot.

Just imagine you are on a 4 x 4 safari and a lion pops up. You need to swap to a different lens quickly before it runs away. How would you like the layout of your bag to be? Are all the pockets easily accessible? Are there enough pockets to organise your things?

I find it very useful to think about this before deciding on your bag.

4. Security

Cameras are very expensive and so are all the equipment that comes with it, thus very prone to being stolen. This might be a weird tip but another thing you might like to consider is a camera bags that does not look like a camera bag.

5. Extra customizability

Some camera bags allow for additional pockets or straps to be added on to make your camera bag more suited for you. Look out for something called ICU (camera bag inserts) that comes with the bag. They come in several sizes and it is possible to buy these in different sizes to switch them out depending on how much gear you are bringing with you.

Now that you have all these thoughts in your head let’s get started!

A. Camera sling bag

This is for the photographer that travels light. You do not have much equipment and just want a bag that you can quickly reach into and grab whatever you want. I do find that the camera sling bags do come in more stylish looks compared to the other two types of bags.

However, having all that weight on one of your shoulders might cause it to start aching. So if you have problems with the weight of your camera, you might want to consider a stylish camera backpack in the next section.

1. Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L (Black)

An easy grab and go bag, this camera shoulder bag is perfect for beginners or those who needs to just carry the essentials. The bag fits a DSLR and 2 lens or a drone.

The extra straps allow you to easily strap in a tripod and the dividers are flexible, so you can change them in whichever way you prefer. The bag also packs flat so you can fold it into a smaller bag as and when you need. It is also a waterproof camera bag so you do not have to worry!

2. Evecase Large Canvas Messenger SLR/DSLR Camera Bag

Slightly bigger and more heavy duty, this bag not only fits all your photography gear but has a separate padded pouch to fit a 14” laptop.

All of those smaller accessories that always seem to get lost in the bag would be easily organised into the smaller zipper pockets. Attach your tripod at the bottom and you are good to go! One should note that this is a bulkier bag in comparison to the rest.

The bag is water-resistant and comes with a raincover.

Weight: 2.76 lbs

3. Koolertron Waterproof Vintage

A lightweight PU leather bag is suitable for those who would like a more stylish look. The camera bag inserts are removable so you can switch this up to be an everyday bag.

One of the smaller bags on this list – it does only fit one DSLR and one lens so it is definitely for the photographer who packs light. I would have preferred to see some zippers on this for any smaller accessories.

Weight: 1 lbs

4. BAGSMART Compact Camera Shoulder Bag for SLR/DSLR

The smallest bag on the list, it is amazing this bag fits all the basics you need as a photographer – a DSLR, two lens and extra pockets for batteries and wires. The in build raincover is also a plus and a must! It even has reversed zippers to prevent water from seeping in.

5. Lowepro Adventura SH 160 II

Weighing a mere 0.88 pounds, this is the most lightweight bag on the list but it does not compromise all the important functions of a camera bag. Specifically designed for the mirrorless camera, the bag should fit all the basic gear you need. At this price point, it is a good value for money.

B. Camera backpack

The camera backpack is for those who go hiking or shooting for a long time. Often, the backpack also comes with other compartments for the laptop and/or water bottle, thus it not only acts purely as a camera bag. Some also fits drones!

Such camera bags are also great disguises as normal backpacks. One thing to consider about a backpack is that you would have to swing it over to the front to reach for your items.

If you are looking for a hiking camera backpack where you can hike and carry your camera, play close attention to this section!

1. Lowepro ProTactic 450 AW Camera Backpack

The Lowepro is a value for money camera backpack for the casual traveller. It is able to fit a DSLR with lens attached, extra lens, a 15″ laptop, tripod and other smaller accessories. The small compartments at the top of the bag also makes it convenient to reach for items especially when you are on a flight. The Lowepro Protactic 450 also does come with a rain hood.

2. F Stop Tilopia

A videographer friend who travels often for work also recommended me to look at F Stop. This is a hardcore mountain series camera backpack, made for comfort and durability. These come in a few sizes – 37L, 50L, 70L and 80L to accommodate everyone.

The 50L is able to fit a camera, three different lens, a tripod and also his drone, even with sufficient free space for clothes and other personal items.

Each ICU unit is water-resistant, the dividers are all customisable and heavily padded for ultimate protection! It is certainly a splurge compared to the other bags I have listed here, but if you are looking for a bag that will last, this would be the one.

External Dimensions (in): 12 d x 14 w x 23.5 h
Weight: 4.1 lbs

3. Canon Deluxe Photo Backpack 200EG

Because it is Canon, you can be sure that this Canon camera bag would be able to meet the basic needs of a camera bag. It is one of the smaller sized backpacks, aimed at the light packer.

It fits a DSLR, a couple of lens and smaller accessories with a water resistant coating so everything is protected. At this price, one cannot really complain. My only qualm about it is that it is not the most appealing camera bag for women.

External Dimensions (in): 7 d x 12 w x 15 h
Weight: 3 lbs

4. AmazonBasics Backpack for SLR/DSLR Cameras and Accessories

The lightest of the entire list and can fit as much as most of the other backpack here, this Amazon camera bag is certainly a steal. The padded cells are all adjustable to fit snugly around your gear and has several zipper compartments for those smaller items. It however does not come with a raincover so that is something I would definitely spend on.

Internal dimensions (in): 10 d x 4.2 wx 14.2 h
Weight: 1.96 lbs

Price from USD29.90

5. USA GEAR Digital SLR Camera Backpack

This camera backpack is really affordable. Priced at $49.99 as I am writing this and even comes in 6 different colours, it is one to consider. It is also one of the top rated camera backpack on Amazon.

It looks sleek unlike many bulky camera backpacks but still padded enough for protection. The bag can fit a full sized camera, two or three lens, a tripod and a 15“ laptop. There are a couple of zipper pockets to organise the smaller accessories. I would say this is a bag that is definitely good enough for a short trip.

External Dimensions (in): 8 d x 12 w x 18 h
Weight: 2.45 lbs
Camera Compartment (in): 6 d x 10.5 w x 11 h
