If you’re looking for Netflix shows to learn a new language, get ready to bookmark this post!

While you’re not able to travel right now, it doesn’t mean you should let your time at home go to waste! Other than watching Netflix shows to inspire you to travel, why not add in a bit of educational element?

I had some fun picking up Spanish words from a couple of series I watched on Netflix so I thought – why not compile some of the best shows to watch on Netflix in various languages for those of you who want to learn a new language at home?

After all, whenever I visit a new country, I love immersing in the local culture, including learning a few handy local phrases to assimilate myself better.

These highly recommended Netflix shows to binge encompass a mixture of hilarious, dark and mysterious themes, so go ahead and pick one you like to get started!


1. The Circle France

This is one really popular Netflix TV show, which is mentioned here another time under Portuguese Netflix shows.

A reality show competition, however, so you’ll hear a lot of slang and more common phrases that aren’t specifically taught in formal French teaching, but it also gives you an insight of the local French pop culture which is fun.

A social experiment reality competition where online players bag their way in to win the 100,000€ prize. Players must choose whether to be themselves or other people.

2. Le Chalet

3. Plan Coeur/ Hook Up Plan

This is a cute and funny series, great for learning colloquialism and French slang.

Elsa, who is unlucky in love, lost her interest in dating and relationships. Her best friends hired a male escort to renew her faith in finding love.

4. The Forest

Unsettling web secrets in the Ardennes Forest were uncovered when a 16-year-old girl disappeared near her village. A local officer investigated the case with the help of her teachers who had a traumatic experience in the same forest.

5. The Break

A mourning police detective moved back to his hometown with his daughter after his wife died. Little did he know a murder case will shake up their break.

6. The Bonfire of Destiny

Do you love a good real story like I do? Inspired by real events, a devastating fire in Paris 1897 in which 126 people died. Three women see their destinies turned upside down by betrayal, identity theft and emancipation.

7. Dix Pour Cent/ Call My Agent

It’s a fabulous French TV series about talent agents who juggle tricky situations after their agency was shaken by the death of its founder. It brings us the scenes of the wild wild world of celebrity where laughter, drama, misdemeanour and tears collide.

It’s hilarious and has a lot of French stars in it! 

8. Unite 42

It’s a clever TV series about French Police agents fighting against a new form of cyber-crime.

9. La Forêt/ The Forest

A mystery TV series about the disappearance of a teen girl from her village in Ardenne Forest.

If you love Stranger Things and are trying to learn French, you should definitely watch it. 

10. Black Spot

Another French mystery TV series about a fictional town in France “Villefranche” which sits in the edge of mysterious forest.

There’s a dwindling number of inhabitants but the crime is rising. Police inspector Laurene investigates the crime which leads her to discover a web of unsettling truths.


11. A Very Secret Service

A Netflix comedy TV show about 23-year-old Andre Merleux who was hired by the French Intelligence service. Merleux is intelligent but impressionable and has so much to learn. She’s trained by three officials to execute delicate and sometimes outlandish operations.

12. Osmosis

It feels like Black Mirror but in a French setting. Osmosis is a futuristic movie set in Paris when a dating app called “Osmosis” can find your true love with 100% accuracy, turning the idea of soulmate into reality.

But is there a price to pay when letting an algorithm decide who you will love, forever and ever? When in exchange for this undying, ageless love, technology can access the innermost recesses of your mind — and the best kept secrets of your heart…

13. Le Bureau des Légendes/ The Bureau

The Bureau, a spy movie about an undercover elite agent where he cannot let go of his false identity or “Legend” as what they call it in French because of love.


14. Les Vampires

Follow the life of Parisian teenager, Doina, a vampire girl who unleashes her vampire tendencies by taking pills and how she’s being pursued by a secret vampire community.

Brazilian Portuguese

15. 3%

A thriller set in a world sharply divided between progress and devastation, where people are given the chance to make it to the “better side.” The twist is, only 3% of the candidates succeed.

16. City of God

Set in Rio in the 80’s. It’s a story of two friends  living the Rio slums call “City of God” diverge as one struggles to become a photographer and one a druglord.

17. Coisa Mais Linda/ Most Beautiful Thing

A story of a young and wealthy woman from Sao Paolo moves to Rio de Janeiro to open a restaurant with her husband. Upon arriving, she discovers that he has abandoned her and fled with all the money. Malu then leaves in search of a new dream amid the emergence of bossa nova in the city with a new love, the musician Chico.


18. La Casa de Papel/ Money Heist

How have you not watched this series already?! If you haven’t, you’re seriously missing out.

Going by the name “The Professor”, he planned to pull off the greatest heist in the history. The Royal Mint of Spain is about to get robbed by 8 thieves who have nothing to lose.

This is hands down one of the best shows to binge watch on Netflix.

19. Cable Girls

If you’re looking for Netflix shows in Spanish, this is another one you cannot miss.

Year 1920 in Madrid, where women’s rights weigh lighter than men’s, four young women got the job in the first national telephone company, making progress by gaining equality with men.

20. La Victima Numero 8

Spanish conspiracy thriller television series loosely based on the August 2017 Barcelona attacks.

21. Elite

Spain’s answer to gossip girl & Pretty Little Liars. I learned so much slang. The clash between a working class and wealthy students, a murder took place in the posh exclusive private school that’s full of secrets.

22. Jane The Virgin

Nice combination of mostly English and Spanish mixed in. With a vow to remain virgin until marriage, Jane’s life turned upside down when she discovered she is pregnant. How? She accidentally got inseminated in the hospital.

23. Casa de las Flores/ The House of Flowers

A story a dysfunctional upper-class Mexican family that own a prestigious floristry shop and a struggling cabaret, both called “The House of Flowers.”

24. Las Chicas de los Cables/ Cable Girls

Set in the 1920’s when telecommunications first operated in Madrid, the series tells of how the lives of four young women change after they start working for this company, which offers them decent pay and some independence.

The show reveals the hardships that working women faced in 1920s Spain, and especially the severe restrictions on the rights of Spanish women in a male-dominated society.

25. Narcos

Another popular Netflix series across the board. Based on a true story, Narcos chronicles the life of the world’s richest and most notorious drug kingpin the world has ever seen.

26. The Magic Schoolbus

This is one Netflix show for teens (or adults alike!). Learn Spanish with ease like a kid with this popular Spanish cartoon series about an eccentric school teacher who takes her class on wondrous educational field trips with the help of a magical school bus. 

27. El Gran Hotel

A drama TV series that revolves around Julio.  A young man arrives at the Grand Hotel, an idyllic place in the middle of the countryside, to investigate the disappearance of his sister. 


28. Merli

A series of a Spanish high school professor who influenced his students including his son with his unconventional way of love, happiness, loss and lessons in life.

29. Si No Te Hubiera Conocido/ If I Hadn’t Met You

A Catalan series of a man named Edward who had lost his wife and his children on a tragic car accident and he believes he has the access to the parallel universe.

Colombian Spanish

30. La Niña

This is based on a true story from a girl who shared how she fought challenges after being recruited on a war by force from the Guerrilla.

31. Distrito Salvaje/ Wild District

This is also a really cool series and it’s made in Bogotá, Colombia primarily.  You’ll notice a slower and more neutral accent, which is easier to understand than the ones from Spain.

This is the first Colombian series on Netflix which is all about redemption, violence, and deceit.

32. Siempre Bruja/ Always a Witch

A Colombian TV series about witches who are shows how powerful magic is. They prove how strong they are and they are the hero of their own stories.

In general, any Colombian series you can find, especially if it’s made in Bogotá, will be good for your language practice.


33. The Circle Brazil

A season reality TV which is a real competition that includes transparency, honesty and all about being true to yourself.

34. Coisa Mais Linda

A Brazilian television series that consists of 7 episodes about the drama of a young wealthy woman who’s in search of a new dream and a purpose.


35. Dark

An international TV series that has so much misery, intense, thrill and creepy scenes that shows the audience how to solve problems. Not for the faint-hearted, I must say.

36. Dogs of Berlin

Two contrasting police detectives are forced into a territorial battle with the Berlin underworld. One of the best German movies on Netflix in my opinion.

37. How To Sell Drugs Online

German comedy-drama television series of a guy who focuses to win his ex-girlfriend back. He made an online business and sells drugs through it.

38. Isi & Ossi

German comedy and romantic film story of a girl who happens to be a daughter of a billionaire and this girl want to pursue her culinary and boxing dreams. Don’t miss out on one of the best foreign films on Netflix!

39. Criminal

Set in four European countries — the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Germany, follow the investigation team as they interrogate different suspects and try to get answers on the crimes they’re possibly connected with.

40. Freud

A series of television crime that re-imagines the life of Sigmund Freud during his younger days. You’ll find all sorts of investigating, conspiracy thrill, and excitement twists in this series.

41. Babylon Berlin

German television series of humour and drama of an inspector who investigates an underground porn ring that will trigger your curiosity to follow the mysteries and uncover the truth.


42. Luna O Nera

An Italian series about a girl who found out that her destiny is being a witch and she is torn between pursuing the love of her life or following what life has prepared for her.

43. Italiano Medio

Italian series about a guy who’s a nature lover and so eager to save the world while trying his best not to compromise.

44. Baby

Italian two seasons of drama about the high school teenagers who go to school in the day time and prostitution at night.


45. Suburra 

An Italian two-season TV show that is based from a book that has the same title about a scandalous political fight for power and money near Rome.


46. Samurai Gourmet

A Japanese series about a Japanese man who shares his passion for food and how his food experiment tasting has influenced so many people across.

47. Midnight Diner

A Japanese TV series drama that’s based on a manga about a restaurant that only opens from midnight to 7 am which offers only four kinds of food in the menu.

48. Giri/ Haji

8 episodes of a Japanese series about a detective from Tokyo who went to London to look for his missing brother but he suddenly got accused of murder.


49. The Bridge

A story of a Swedish detective who works together with a Danish inspector in order to find the killer of the body who got found from a bridge between Sweden and Denmark.

50. Caliphate

A Swedish TV series that has thrill and drama with an 8 episodes about ISIS recruiting women in western countries.

51. Quicksand

Intense Swedish drama that is based on the best selling novel about a tragedy of a girl named Maja that found herself on a trial murder.


52. Ragnarok

A drama series full of Norwegian language inspired by norse mythology about a town experiencing warm winters and violent downpours.

53. Borderliner

Narratives of crime mystery and its depth, a police officer investigates a man who committed suicide in his hometown.


54. The Rain

Danish original drama about the two Danish siblings who joined a group of survivors due to a rain that carries virus.


55. Bordertown

Crime and family drama of a detective who took a break in order for him to spend more time with his family while so many disturbing cases was waiting for him.


56. Fauda

3 seasons and 36 episodes of thrill from a retired Israeli agent man who joined the Israel Defense Force to go undercover at a wedding and hunt a Palestinian militant.

57. Shtisel

Israeli drama television series of an ultra orthodox family living in Jerusalem who worked out their acts of love, loss and challenges of life.

Turkish TV series of drama and fantasy of a young man who’s a shopkeeper named Hakan who was later given a task to protect Istanbul from its mortal enemies.

59. Atiye/ The Gift

Turkish series of drama with 2 seasons and 8 episodes about an Istanbul painter who linked her past with Anatolian Archaeological site and its history.

Jordanian Arabic

60. Jinn

Jinn is fun for studying and practicing Jordanian Arabic. The show revolves around a supernatural drama about a girl who unknowingly released a jinn that has a boy inside who will bring darkness in the world.


61. Better Than Us

A family on the brink of splitting up become the owners of a cutting-edge robot being sought by a corporation, homicide investigators and terrorists.


62. Case

Police investigating the apparent suicide of an Icelandic ballerina find dark forces within polite metropolitan society.

63. Valhalla Murders

An Oslo detective with a painful past returns to his native Iceland to help a dedicated cop hunt a serial killer with a link to a mysterious photo. 


64. Ultraviolet

A story of an online community of cyber detectives and their quest to solve crimes in Warsaw. Along the way, they develop friendships with their pursuit for justice. 


65. Ares

A horror drama series that follows the story of Rosa, a first year medical student in Amsterdam as she joins the mysterious medical society “Ares” and slowly discovers what they really are.

What can I say? I have to admit I got distracted more than once trying to publish this post. Some of the trailers are so attention-grabbing!
