My 10 Top Restaurants In Queenstown, New Zealand

1. My Thai Lounge

my thai lounge, queenstown restaurant

Situated right by the stunning Lake Wakatipu, My Thai Lounge is where I head to whenever I’m craving comforting and authentic Thai cuisine. The lively array of flavours, ranging from the zesty tang of lime to the spicy punch of chilli, encapsulates the essence of Thai cuisine. Paired with their warm service, it offers a glimpse into the genuine Thai hospitality.

I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of their dishes and always leave thoroughly satisfied. Whether it’s the comforting warmth of a Tom Yum Goong or the tantalising spice of a Green Curry, My Thai Lounge excels in every dish.

A couple I recommended this place to while they were on holiday in Queenstown ended up dining here for three consecutive evenings!

My favourite dishes: Prawn Donuts, Som Tum, Soft Shell Crab Curry, My Thai Fried Rice

2. The Meat Preachers

meat preacher, queenstown restaurant

A haven for carnivores tucked away in a quaint, cosy corner of Frankton, The Meat Preachers are the brains behind Zamora, a deli dedicated to creating meats which they and their families in South America have eaten and enjoyed.

To share this experience with others, this South American-inspired BBQ was set up and is cooked with Zamora’s top-notch produce with those traditional homely flavours.

The cosy 27-seat joint allows for diners to watch their talented meat preachers slow-roast meats over an open flame and the aroma of smoky goodness filling the air will seriously get your tastebuds tantalised.

My favourite dishes: BBQ Platter (get the rustic potatoes!), Pulled Pork Burger, Brisket Sandwich

3. Canyon Brewing

canyon brewing, queenstown restaurant

Nestled by the picturesque Shotover River, Canyon Brewing is a short drive away from Queenstown CBD, offering breathtaking views that more than compensate for the distance. Guests can relish the stunning scenery from the outdoor alfresco area or retreat indoors if the weather turns chilly.

The food menu evolves with the seasons, providing fresh, innovative twists on traditional dishes that perfectly complement their selection of locally brewed beers. The idea centres on share-style dishes, my preferred style as it allows everyone to sample a bit of everything. Their freshly made pizza boasts a delectable crust that is both chewy and delicious and is for sure the star of the show.

My favourite dishes: Sourdough Flatbread, Woodfired Cabbage, Wagyu Beef Sliders, Woodfired Sourdough Pizza (my go-to is the mushroom!)

4. SODA

A restaurant that asserts itself as more than just a venue but a vibe, and I wholeheartedly agree! It’s difficult to identify the exact element of SODA that enhances my dining experience the most.

The establishment fosters a great dining experience thanks to its amiable staff who are adept at introducing their top menu items, locally sourced cuisine with a creative flair, a stylish interior that exude sophistication yet maintain a welcoming ambiance, and a striking bar signalling a lively evening ahead.

Here, shared plates are the preferred dining style, designed to foster connections and create memorable moments among groups. SODA definitely sets the stage for an evening filled with laughter, conversation and good cheer.

My favourite dishes: Fire-roasted Bread, Market Fish Ceviche, Ravioli, Seafood Paella, Leafy Greens, Potato Bravas

5. Yonder

Open for coffee, brunch, dinner, and drinks, I usually don’t think much of the food at places that seemingly lack a culinary focus. However, Yonder really does excel at all of them!

By day, it’s a relaxed spot serving delightful coffees and pastries in an outdoor setting reminiscent of a friend’s garden brunch. As evening falls, it transforms into a cosy, ambient space with a menu inspired by their travels. If you need a break from your jam-packed itinerary, don’t miss their happy hour from 4-6pm which offers a 20% discount on tap beers and house cocktails.

My favourite dishes: Brunch – Blueberry & Lemon Pancakes, The Bacon Butty, The Pork Benny; Mushrooms on Toast from the cabinet, Dinner – Famous Cheese Bread, Good Greens, Japanese Fried Chicken, Beef Brisket and Chips

6. The Ballarat

ballarat, queenstown restaurant

The Ballarat was initially known to me for its music and parties, but I had never actually considered their food. However, that changed with my first visit and led to 5 more trips! The interior exudes a nostalgic charm: dark wood floors, plush leather seats, and warm lighting.

Adorned with vintage knick-knacks, including old-fashioned framed photographs and silverware, you’re taken back to the bygone eras.

The burgers never fail to impress: generously sized with perfectly greased buns. The interesting selection of burgers always poses a tough dilemma for me. It’s hard to choose just 1! At night, tables and chairs are cleared to unveil a vibrant dance floor, inviting everyone to join the lively party.

My favourite dishes: Peri Poppins, The Southern Belle, Halloumi Fries, Chicken Wing, Charred Corn on the Cob, Roasted Broccoli & Feta Salad

7. The Boat Shed Cafe & Bistro

the boatshed, queenstown restaurant

Set in the restored, historic New Zealand Railways Shipping Office, The Boat Shed’s building dates back to 1869-78 and was originally a store. It was situated in central Queenstown and was moved to its current location on the Frankton waterfront, which can be reached via a leisurely stroll along the Frankton Track or by water taxi from Queenstown Bay.

The iconic cafe , beloved by locals, took home the two top café awards at the 2023 Southern Lakes Hospitality Award, winning outstanding café and outstanding barista. I suggest making a reservation via Instagram DM as the place is usually packed.

While the interior exudes a unique historic charm, resembling its original state, my personal preference is to relax outside by Lake Wakatipu on a sunny day, immersing in the gentle waves and sunshine. It never fails to be an instant mood booster! The food portions are generously sized so be rest assured you won’t be leaving hungry.

My favourite dishes: Chorizo Scramble, Cilbir Eggs, Steak Sandwich; Sandwich of the Day, Sweet Muffin from the cabinet

8. Bespoke Kitchen

bespoke, queenstown restaurant

The team at Bespoke Kitchen prides themselves on keeping things simple, real and beautifully presented. Expect no less from them because stepping into the cafe located just a 5-minute walk from central Queenstown, that’s exactly what is being delivered.

Their thoughtfully crafted menu reflects their commitment to promoting health and wellbeing while ensuring delicious flavours.

The menu changes with the season to embrace fresh, unprocessed and local ingredients.

The delightful array of cabinet food always brings a pleasant surprise, making it a challenge each time I’m there whether to choose from the cabinet or menu. They execute sweet and savoury equally well, and I always leave with a sweet treat made from wholesome ingredients.

My favourite dishes: Ambrosia Pancakes, Smashed Avocado, Poached Eggs & Halloumi on Rye, Breakfast Board; Chia Seed Pudding, Snickers Bar, Pork & Fennel Roll, Cupcakes from the cabinet

9. Aosta

aosta, queenstown restaurant

The name Aosta comes from a region located north of Italy and boasts an alpine valley characterised by four seasons, rich flora, fauna and soils akin to those found in Central Otago. Positioned similarly on the 45th parallel, both Aosta and Central Otago exhibit remarkable synergies in their terroirs.

Aosta’s cuisine also draws inspiration from its region, combining carefully selected ingredients from local growers, breeders and suppliers. The wine is cultivated in the surrounding lands of Central Otago and Arrowtown to further enhance the gastronomic experience.

Aosta’s menu boasts a plethora of enticing choices, sure to overwhelm you with options. If you find yourself grappling with decisions, ‘A Taste of the South’ offers an Italian twist on omakase, entrusting the chef to serve up the day’s finest fare. Nestled within a contemporary interior, the restaurant harmonises modern menu selections with its chic setting.

My favourite dishes: Aosta Focaccia, Fiordland Venison Carpaccio, Kina Pappardelle, Agnolotti ‘Carbonara’, Black Origin Wagyu

10. Bavette Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen

Bavette Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen, queenstown restaurant

In Latin, ‘Mora’ means to linger, to take pause. This essence reflects the Mora’s core aim of providing guests with the opportunity to take time, to slow down and enjoy good food and wine in the company of loved ones. It is not hard to do so in the relaxed outdoor setting surrounded by vineyards in the heart of Gibbston Valley.

The culinary team crafts dishes from scratch, using the finest sustainable ingredients sourced from the South Island. The food not only tastes exceptionally fresh and well-prepared, but is further elevated by the exquisite wines of Mora Central Otago. Not much of a wine connoisseur myself, I appreciate that the menu comes with suggested wine pairings for each dish.

My favourite dishes: Breakfast – Apple Cider Sausages, Seared Halloumi, Cedar Wood Mt Cook Salmon, Lunch – Warm Breads, Scallop Ceviche, Cedar Wood Mt Cook Salmon, Royalburn Lamb Oyster Shoulder, Curious Croppers Heirloom Tomatoes
