Taiwan ruined my expectations in the best possible way.

I arrived thinking I had it figured out — Taipei’s night markets, some good beef noodle soup, maybe a day trip to Jiufen. Standard first-timer itinerary.

What I didn’t account for was having my fortune told by a trained bird in Tainan, lobbing firecrackers at a deity during a temple festival, and finding a beach in Kenting that genuinely made me question why anyone bothers flying to Bali.

Taiwan is a country that rewards curiosity more than most. The neon-lit streets of Ximending are worth your time, absolutely. The Taipei night markets are as good as advertised.

The thing is, the country doesn’t stop there — it just keeps going, from the marble gorges of Taroko in the east to the volcanic hot springs of Beitou in the north to the entirely different pace of Kaohsiung in the south.

The route I ended up doing — Taipei down through Eastern Taiwan to Kaohsiung — took me through neon-lit cities, quiet coastal towns, and mountain roads that appeared at intervals like the country was showing off. It took about 10 days and felt like 3 different countries stitched together.

It also required reliable data from day one, so I sorted an eSIM for Taiwan before I landed and never thought about connectivity again.

Nobody warned me that Wanli UFO Village would feel that unsettling in person.

I’d seen the photos online and thought it looked cool — rows of saucer-shaped houses on the northern coast of Taiwan, built in the 1960s when someone genuinely believed this was what the future looked like. They were abandoned in the 1970s and nobody’s touched them since. Overgrown, salt-damaged, completely silent.

Walking through it is a different thing entirely from looking at it on a screen. There’s a specific stillness to the place that the photos don’t capture. Locals have called it haunted for decades, and standing in the middle of those empty shells on a grey afternoon, you understand why that story stuck.

Worth a visit if you’re heading up the northern coast — just maybe not alone, and maybe not at dusk.

Rainbow Village in Taichung’s Nantun District exists because one 99-year-old man refused to let his neighbourhood get demolished.

Huang Yung-Fu — known locally as Grandpa Rainbow — was a retired soldier living in what was once a military dependents’ village earmarked for redevelopment. Rather than leave, he picked up a paintbrush and covered every surface he could reach in murals: animals, figures, swirling patterns, scenes from memory.

The whole village, wall by wall.The local government eventually halted demolition plans to preserve it, which is one of the better outcomes in modern urban history. It’s small enough to walk through in an hour, colourful enough to fill a camera roll, and the kind of place that feels genuinely personal rather than designed for tourists — because it was never designed at all.

5. Taroko Gorge

 

Taroko Gorge is the kind of place that makes you genuinely question why you spent a few days in Taipei when this existed the whole time.

The gorge sits inside Taroko National Park on Taiwan’s east coast — roughly 4 hours from Taipei by train to Hualien, then another 20 minutes by bus or taxi into the park. The Liwu River has been cutting through marble and granite for millions of years, and what it’s carved out is a sheer-walled canyon that drops hundreds of metres, with a road blasted through the rock face running the entire length of it.

Walking the Shakadang Trail along the riverbed, the water is this specific turquoise that doesn’t look real. The marble walls above you are streaked white and grey and occasionally pink, and the scale of the whole thing doesn’t fully register until you’re standing inside it.

The night markets are packed with stalls full of Taiwanese specialties such as stinky tofu, which gets its odour from its fermentation in a brine mix. There’s also bubble tea in endless varieties and flavours, which was invented in Taiwan, and tiny shops full of household items, racks packed with the latest fast fashion trends and cute candies and toys printed with colourful anime characters.

13. Ximending, Taipei

As mentioned before as part of some of the spots in Taipei you’ll obsess over, this trendy district is packed with fashionable boutiques, comfy hotels, mega cinemas, hip cafes and colourful pubs. Known as “little Tokyo,” the Ximending district is a neon-light homage to Japanophilia and a paradise for anime or Hello Kitty fans. Tiny alleys are lit up with lanterns or packed with street art while giant posters of scantily-clad anime characters hand in shop windows.

Ximending is also a very safe and well-lit district that I’d recommend staying at for female or solo travellers who aren’t familiar with Taiwan. It boasts many upscale hotels and hip boutique hotels as well. When I wandered alone at night, I always felt safe and most of the streets were still vibrant with nightlife.

Shopping: Explore the myriad of shops and boutiques lining the pedestrian-friendly streets of Ximending, where you’ll find everything from trendy fashion and accessories to quirky souvenirs and unique gifts.

You can admire the original French Chanel no. 5 bottle, a series of Taiwanese bicycles, or a set of 1990 Taiwanese blades forged from bomb shells all in one place.

Song Yan Gallery is a beautiful shop filled with quirky and fun designs and makes a great spot to pick up some adorable rolls of washi tape or cute pencil cases. 

The park is perfect for a sunny afternoon with its gardens and cafes, and it’s worth checking ahead because there are often festivals or performances happening. 

Called the “creative hub of Taipei,” the park often serves as a venue for fashion shows, seminars and short-term exhibits. There are also occasional fun events for children.

Also, don’t miss the the National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium in Kenting and the Chimei Museum & Special Exhibition in Tainan.

15. Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei 

These clusters of grey houses perched along a hillside are a fascinating maze of passageways and staircases leading to adorable cafes or artists’ open studios. 

The Treasure Hill Artist Village is a former air raid shelter that’s been transformed into a creative community full of boutiques and galleries. Can you believe, it was once filled with squatters and war veterans escaping mainland China?!

Today, it’s become an eco-friendly art village that occasionally hosts farmers markets and music events. It has reopened as an artist village in 2010 and draws in visitors with colourful murals and decorations.  

I’d recommend a couple hours for browsing and walking around, though you should prepare to do plenty of stair-climbing. 

The village currently has 14 studios, though keep in mind that artists live and work here and not everything is open to the public.

This gorgeous temple was built in 1738 by settlers from mainland China, and contains both Buddhist elements and alters to Chinese deities.

One of the city’s most famous temples, it’s fragrant with incense and filled with vases of purple orchids. 

Most Taiwanese practice a mix of Buddhism and Taoism, along with various folk beliefs, and this temple is testament to that diverse mix. Longshan was built as a Buddhist temple that later added Taoism deities. It now contains more than 100 gods and goddesses.
