By 29 March 2024 May 30th, 2024 No Comments

Located far from the usual tourist trails yet brimming with vibrant activity, Bocas del Toro is known as the “Mouths of the Bull.”

Unlike its obscure counterparts, Bocas del Toro shines brightly on the travel radar, which competes fiercely with Panama’s famed San Blas islands and other pristine beaches of nearby Costa Rica. In this article, I’ll tell you what makes this archipelago so special.

Having spent over 2 weeks immersing myself in the wonders of Bocas del Toro in June 2022, I’m excited to share this ultimate travel guide packed with insider tips on everything from must-see attractions to hidden gems and, of course, where to find the most delicious eats.

Sure, some travellers we met along the way confessed to feeling underwhelmed by Bocas del Toro. But for those of us with a down-to-earth perspective, it’s hard not to fall in love with this slice of paradise.

Admittedly, Bocas Town has its quirks. It may not win awards for cleanliness, and accessing the best beaches requires a bit of effort—be it by driving, biking, or joining a guided tour.

But enough about the potential drawbacks. One of the pros of this archipelago island is that the accommodations here are actually very easy to book.

So let’s focus more on the incredible experiences awaiting you in Bocas del Toro. As a surfer, diver, nature lover, and backpacker, I found this place to be a haven.

How To Get To Bocas del Toro, Panama

horse riding, bocas del toro

By horse, perhaps? Just kidding.

In June 2022, I went to Bocas del Toro for a quick visa run after nearly 90 days in Costa Rica. My journey started with a series of vans and buses from Costa Rica to the border.

We crossed over from Puerto Viejo, the closest point in Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro. Don’t forget to pay the Costa Rica exit tax before crossing the bridge.

That was my route, but there are several other great ways to get to Bocas del Toro, Panama. One very convenient option is a 45-minute plane ride from Panama City. It’s quick and straightforward.

Let’s break down the ways to reach Bocas del Toro, Panama:

By Plane

If you’re looking to reach Bocas del Toro quickly, catching a flight is your best bet.

The Bocas del Toro (BOC) airport is in Bocas Town on Isla Colón. Keep in mind that Air Panama is the only airline operating at this airport, offering several flights daily to and from cities across Panama.

Now, if you’re arriving from another country, your journey will likely kick off at Panama City’s bustling Tocumen International Airport (PTY).

From here, you’ll need to hop on a ground transfer to Albrook International Airport (PAC), which serves as Air Panama’s hub. To travel between these two airports, you can hail a cab or summon an Uber.

By Boat

If you’re up for a budget-friendly adventure and have some time to spare, consider taking a shuttle bus followed by a water taxi to reach Bocas del Toro.

The cost of boat transportation to Bocas del Toro varies depending on the departure point and the type of boat. Water taxis from Almirante to Bocas Town typically range from USD 6 to USD 10 per person, while private boat charters can range from USD 50 to USD 100.

Most cities in Panama offer shuttle services to Almirante, the gateway to Bocas del Toro. If you’re starting from Panama City, you can opt for an overnight bus ride, which typically takes around 10 to 11 hours.

Having taken this route myself, I recommend planning your journey carefully. Make sure to pack some snacks, water, and entertainment for the long bus ride.

Once there, the water taxi awaits to whisk you away to the enchanting islands of Bocas del Toro.

By Bus and Boat

Travelling to Bocas del Toro by bus and boat combination offers a budget-friendly option for those exploring Panama on a tight budget.

The cost of travelling to Bocas del Toro by bus and boat combination varies depending on the departure point and the bus company. Bus tickets from Panama City to Almirante typically range from USD 25 to USD 40, while boat tickets from Almirante to Bocas Town range from USD 6 to USD 10.

Whether you opt for a quick flight, a scenic boat ride, or a budget-friendly bus journey followed by a water taxi adventure, each mode of transportation offers its own unique experience.
