Exploring a tropical destination is a bucket-list dream for many travellers — especially when the chill of winter sends you reaching for the travel magazine. Choosing a destination between Costa Rica and Panama, however, can prove to be a little difficult sometimes. 

With so many beautiful, pristine beaches and lush jungles to explore, how can you possibly narrow it down?

Today, I’ll compare travelling to Costa Rica and Panama, highlighting their unique attractions, landscapes, activities, and other factors to help you make an informed decision about your next travel destination.

I’ve recently visited Costa Rica when my tourist visa in the US was about to expire in late 2020. I fell in love with a beach town called Tamarindo where I spent 5+ weeks at.

Later in February 2022, I took a 5-day trip to Panama City as a stopover between Peru and the Dominican Republic. Panama surprised me in more ways than one (in a pleasant way!).

I *promise* to keep this post between Costa Rica and Panama as impartial as I can.

We’ll take an in-depth look at both of these spectacular countries and the experiences that they have to offer, so you can decide for yourself what country to visit first.

Rice, Beans, Chocolate, and Coffee

To kick off, let’s start with an overview of what you can expect in Central America — including Costa Rica and Panama.

Located south of Mexico and west of the Caribbean Sea, Central America provides a colourful land bridge between North America and South America. 

Stretched between the nature reserves of Southern Mexico and the forested northwest tip of Colombia, Central America provides lush, verdant tropical forests on the mainland and world-class snorkelling opportunities off the shore.

Easy access to the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east provide a diversity of wild and sheltered beach experiences.

Positioned on the thinnest stretch of land before you reach Colombia and directly adjacent to each other, Costa Rica and Panama share a similar climate, cuisine, language, and approach to life. 

In both countries, expect a warm, tropical climate with the wet season from May to November and the dry season from December to April. Temperatures in Costa Rica range between 17.2°C to 27.2°C and are a few degrees warmer in Panama at 21°C to 32°C.

The cuisine is largely based on a combination of carbs and seafood. Breakfast of rice, beans, yucca, eggs, and fried banana is standard fare, with a cup of exquisite coffee and fresh fruit smoothie to help it all go down.
