Travelling by bus is also a popular way to get to Guatemala from nearby countries like El Salvador and Mexico. Guatemala is home to several major bus companies that offer cheap and regular services throughout Guatemala, making it an ideal option for budget travellers.
One of these companies is the Guatemala Transport ServiceUnion, which offers luxury buses with air-conditioning and snacks. Guatemala also has a number of local bus companies such as Pullmantur and Guatemala’s own Transportes, that run frequent services throughout the country. These are often cheaper but may not be as comfortable or reliable as the Guatemala Transport Union’s luxury buses.
How to Get Around Guatemala
Once you’ve arrived in Guatemala, the best way to get around in my opinion is by taking shuttle buses or renting a car. Guatemala has an extensive network of highways and roads connecting its different cities, so driving is a great way to explore Guatemala’s stunning landscapes.

Pullman Bus
While chicken buses are second-hand, Pullman buses are Guatemala’s most luxurious form of public transportation or first-class.

Minibus & Pick-up

There are also shared taxis or colectivos that offer a similar service as the chicken buses and minibuses, but they usually require passengers to book in advance and the prices can be higher than other forms of public transportation.

If you’d like to explore Guatemala with more freedom, renting a car is your best option. Guatemala’s highways and roads are well-maintained, making it an excellent choice for travellers who want to visit Guatemala’s remote areas.
Renting a car in Guatemala can be cheap; however, there are some extra costs you need to consider such as insurance and fuel costs. Guatemala’s roads can also be quite dangerous, so it’s important to be vigilant when driving in Guatemala.
