Monsoon Period in Sri Lanka
The rainfall pattern is one of the most decisive factors when planning your tour to Sri Lanka. The Southwest side of the Island including the hill country receives monsoon rains from April or May to September. But the peak time is from April to June.
The second monsoon period, also known as the Maha monsoons, hits the Eastern Coast of the island from November to March. The peak time is from November to December.
However, a mid-monsoon period can also occur before Maha monsoons in between October and November, causing heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms to occur anywhere on the island.
The Average Temperatures in Sri Lanka
The temperature in Sri Lanka stays constant due to its close location to the Equator. The temperature of coastal and lowland areas ranges from 26-30°C. It increases to 30°C during the hottest part of the day.
Temperature also decreases with altitude. The temperature in Kandy stays between 18-22°C, but in Nuwara Eliya, the temperature remains pleasant between 14-17°C.
Temperature decreases during the night time like everywhere else, but in the hills it can become very cold, often close to the freezing point.
Humidity is also another critical part of Sri Lankan weather and climate. It increases to 90% in the Southwest part of the island at times, but stays between 60% to 80% across the rest of the island.

There is no clear answer to what the best month is for visiting Sri Lanka. The time varies according to the different weather conditions across the island.
This means that it depends on where you want to go when touring Sri Lanka. The period between December and March is suitable when heading for the Western or South Coasts and the hill country.
Whereas when visiting the Eastern Coast and the North, the period between April or May to September is recommended.
Visiting Sri Lanka during the Winter Season [December – February]
The Northern parts of the island including the Eastern Coast are off limits during winters. That’s because it’s quite wet at this time of the year.
It is a good time to go to Weligama on the Southern Coast or enjoy the beaches at Mirissa or Unawatuna Bay though, as you can also spot whales at this time of the year.
- Galle
- Galle
Visit Galle, the colonial fort town, famous for the Galle Literary Festival that happens every year in late January or early February.
Don’t forget to visit Kandy and the hill country to explore sights such as Horton Plains National Park and Adam’s Peak during this period.
TIP: Try to book in advance due to the peak Christmas season.
Visiting Sri Lanka in Spring [March – May]
March is still a good month to plan your tour to the South and Southwest parts of the Island. You can not only whale watch off the South Coast but also visit the Northern and the Eastern parts of the Island, for example, the city of Jaffna, and the Cultural Triangle.
May is when the weather becomes extremely humid in the South. Visit the hill country for better temperatures in May. The Buddhist festival of Vesak Poya is also held in May.
Visiting Sri Lanka in Summer [June – August]
Summer time is best for exploring the North such as Jaffna Peninsula and the nearby islands. You can experience Tamil culture in Jaffna.

A beach in Galle, Sri Lanka
The East Coast is also home to many lovely beaches. Kandy’s Esala Poya Perahera, the most lavish festival in Sri Lanka, is also held in July or August.
As mentioned in my earlier post on “What Is Sri Lanka Famous For“, This is also the beginning of The Gathering of massive herds of elephant to Sri Lanka’s national parks, so if you want to be surrounded by hundreds of them, it’s a good time to visit Sri Lanka in August through to September.
Visiting Sri Lanka in the Fall [September – November]
The weather conditions in the Northern and Eastern parts of the island become favourable in September.
The period of main monsoons comes between October to November making weather unpredictable across the island. This means that you can expect showers of rain regardless of your location during this time period anywhere on the island.
