My Week on Croatian Waters

If you’re up for an incredible sailing adventure, Croatia is a must-visit destination. In 7 days, you’ll sail approximately 150 nautical miles and explore charming coastal towns. Believe me, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss!

My week-long adventure onboard a boat with Fjaka Sail surpassed all expectations. I’ve had the opportunity to explore different destinations in Croatia that I never got to when travelling Croatia overland in the summer of 2022. I must say, the week on board with Fjaka Sail took the adventure to a whole new level.

Croatia by sea: My 7-day experience

The experience with Fjaka Sail was an unforgettable experience for me, and one of the highlights was definitely island hopping. From Dubrovnik to Mljet and all the way to Hvar Island and many more, I had the opportunity to explore captivating attractions and soak up the unique charm of each destination.

The duration of the route is perfectly suited for those seeking to fully appreciate the underrated islands of Croatia without any sense of haste. But what can you really expect from such an experience?

Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. I’ll go over everything you need to know about this exciting sailing destination, the islands I visited and the activities I engaged in and what you can look forward to during your trip.

1. Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a coastal city nestled on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, renowned for its magnificent architecture, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant cultural heritage. From the moment I set foot in Dubrovnik, my senses were overwhelmed by the ancient city’s marble streets, towering walls and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.

Whilst visiting this stunning sail week destination, I took it upon myself to explore this old city and immerse myself in its attractions. The architecture and urban planning of Dubrovnik is magnificent, to say the least.

The ancient city walls that surround the city centre create a magical atmosphere.

You can stroll along the picturesque Stradun, which is filled with cafes, restaurants and shops. One of the must-see attractions in Dubrovnik is the impressive Dubrovnik Cathedral. What can you do here? Well, a lot! Sailing, swimming, kayaking, and island hopping are just a few activities to be enjoyed.

Dubrovnik’s crystal clear waters make it the perfect setting for those who love water sports and the city’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Dubrovnik is a must-visit for anyone looking for a perfect combination of history, beauty, and adventure.

2. Mljet

Mljet is a paradise for nature lovers, with its lush forests and crystal-clear lakes. With its stunning scenery and countless attractions, it’s a must-see destination. Whether you’re looking to hike through its lush green forests or swim in the crystal-clear waters.

While exploring this idyllic location, I discovered its many attractions – from the ancient monastery of St. Mary’s to the impressive Odysseus’ cave, this island holds a story to tell at every corner.

During my stay, I was amazed to learn that there is so much one can do here. Whether it be swimming in the secluded beaches, hiking through the verdant forests, or indulging in fresh seafood dishes, Mijet had something for everyone.

This experience was truly one of a kind, and I would highly recommend everyone to add this charming island to their travel list!

3. Korcula

Another beautiful island destination is Korcula, which is known for its idyllic beaches and charming old town. During my sail week adventure, I had the opportunity to explore a stunning gem of an island that lies off the Croatian coast.

With its clear, turquoise waters and pristine beaches, Korcula boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Mediterranean. But this stunning destination isn’t just a pretty face; there are plenty of things to do and see here. Whether you’re into history, culture, or adventure, Korcula has something to offer everyone.

I was amazed by the island’s beautiful scenery and crystal-clear waters. I also explored the local shops and markets, where I indulged in some delicious local cuisine and wines.

There are plenty of activities to do here, including kayaking, cycling, swimming, and hiking. Overall, my experience in Korcula was an unforgettable one that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the natural beauty and rich culture of this stunning island.

4. Bisevo

Bisevo is a small island known for its natural wonders such as the Blue Cave and the Silver Cave, which can be explored by boat or kayak.

As I sailed into Bisevo, I was struck by the small island’s unassuming beauty. Located off the coast of Croatia, Bisevo is a destination that boasts stunningly clear waters, hidden coves, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. One of the island’s major attractions is the Blue Cave, a shimmering grotto that captures the sunlight and creates an otherworldly glow.

Besides visiting the cave, other activities to do in Bisevo include exploring the local village, swimming in the refreshing sea, or enjoying some delicious seafood at one of the island’s quaint restaurants.

Bisevo truly is a charming summer destination that’s well worth the visit.

5. Vis

Vis is one of the most picturesque Mediterranean islands that I had the privilege of visiting during the 7-day liveaboard. It’s a larger island with a rich history and culture. In fact, Vis is a popular stop on the Croatia Sail Week route.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, delve into history, or partake in thrilling outdoor activities, Vis offers something for everyone.

It’s a destination that is home to a multitude of natural wonders and hidden gems. A walk through the quaint streets of the island is a treat in itself. I spent some time exploring its attractions, renting a bike to discover the pleasant countryside, relaxing on the warm sandy beaches, and sampling delicious local cuisine.

The opportunities for adventure and recreation were endless: from diving, snorkelling, fishing, and hiking to simply lounging on the beach and taking in the stunning coastal views.

Vis is truly a paradise for anyone seeking an island getaway that’s far away from the crowded tourist trails. I can’t wait to come back to this stunning island and discover more of its delights in the future.

6. Bol

Home to the famous Zlatni Rat beach, Bol is a picturesque town on the island of Brac. Besides soaking up the sun on this stunning beach, visitors can also visit a 15th-century Dominican monastery or take a hike up to Vidova Gora for sweeping views of the island.

As soon as I arrived, I was immediately struck by its narrow streets and old stone houses that exuded such an authentic charm.

But what really stole my heart was the stunning Zlatni Rat beach, which is renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe. I spent my time there basking in the warm sun, swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, and indulging in delicious Mediterranean cuisine at the local restaurants.

When I wanted a bit of adventure, I took a hike up to Vidova Gora for breathtaking views of the island. One of the most memorable experiences in Bol was participating in the annual Bol Regatta, a thrilling and challenging sailing event that truly highlighted the town’s strong maritime culture.

I can’t recommend visiting Bol enough for anyone looking for an authentic and relaxing Mediterranean experience.

7. Hvar

Hvar, often referred to as the “sunniest spot in Europe”, was filled with lively bars, restaurants, and clubs. It was the perfect place to let loose and have some fun. This trendy island is a popular destination for its vibrant nightlife, but it also has plenty to offer during the day. My experience in Hvar was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I stepped off the boat onto this sun-kissed island, I was taken aback by its charm and beauty. As someone who loves to explore new places, Hvar offers endless opportunities for adventure.

During the day, I hiked up to the highest point on the island and was rewarded with stunning panoramic views. I also couldn’t resist taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters of its hidden coves. And as the sun set, the island came to life with its vibrant nightlife scene. From lively bars to trendy clubs, there was never a dull moment in Hvar. But it wasn’t just about partying – I also took some time to appreciate the town centre’s impressive architecture, a testament to the island’s rich history.

8. Makarska

Makarska is a beautiful coastal town located in Croatia. During my stay, I couldn’t resist exploring its many attractions. The town is situated between the stunning Biokovo mountain range and the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, offering visitors a breathtaking view. The beaches here are magnificent, with crystal clear waters and clean sand that make for an unforgettable sunbathing experience.

While in Makarska, I indulged in a variety of delicious dishes that the town has to offer. From local seafood delicacies to the famous grilled meats, everything was finger-licking good.

The town has a vibrant nightlife scene where visitors can unwind after a day of exploring. There are many activities one can do in Makarska, including hiking in the mountain ranges and water sports along the coastline. Overall, I had a great experience in Makarska, a town that truly offers a unique and unforgettable experience to its visitors.

9. Split

At Ultra Croatia music festival

Split is a phenomenal sail week destination. It was my second time visiting in 2 consecutive summers, but still, I was captivated by everything it had to offer. The city is incredibly picturesque, with a stunning coastline that boasts crystal-clear waters. Its attractions are boundless, from the historical Diocletian’s Palace to the charming Old Town.

There are a plethora of things you can do here, such as taking a stroll along the Riva Promenade or indulging in the mouth-watering local cuisine at one of the many restaurants.

But there’s more to Split than its attractions. During sail week, the city comes alive with activities such as beach parties, island hopping, and sunset sails.

My time here coincided with the annual Ultra Festival and it was SO much fun doing my first ever festival with a bunch of newfound friends from the past week of sailing together! We partied til 5am and saw the sun rise, would you believe that!

You will never run out of things to do here, and for those who enjoy maritime activities, Split is a must-visit destination.
