But for me, the idea of spending autumn somewhere the sun still shines brightly was too tempting to resist. And they were half right: it was hot. What they got wrong was the crowded part. With the heat came noticeably fewer tourists, which meant I could actually enjoy the trip on my own terms.

Renting a car took minutes instead of the queues I’d heard horror stories about, a sailing day between islands felt like I had the Aegean to myself, and even Mykonos gave me a taste of its beach club scene without the summer scrum. Locals were friendlier too, always ready to share a smile or point me toward their favourite spot on the island.

According to Rough Guides, average air temperatures in Athens range from 18–24°C (64–75°F), while the southern islands, Crete, Santorini, and Rhodes, can still climb to around 25°C (77°F). 

Sea temperatures across the country generally sit between 21–23°C (70–73°F), though they cool quickly as the month goes on, so if swimming is a priority, aim for earlier rather than later in October.

1. Milos — Best For Escaping The Crowds

Milos is mostly unknown to tourists, which is exactly the appeal. Hop on a private boat for a day tour around the surrounding islets, and spend an afternoon wandering the Cycladic-style balconies of Plaka, the island’s hilltop capital.

That makes it the strongest choice on this list if beach time is non-negotiable for your trip. 5. Athens — Best For History And Culture

Athens holds some of the most famous archaeological sites on the planet. The Acropolis sits perched above the city on a rocky outcrop, giving you a vantage point over several ancient structures at once. It’s genuinely one of the busiest attractions in the country, so arrive early to beat the crowds, and book tickets in advance to skip the queue entirely. Because of that, I personally didn’t find Athens to be the safest city in the world. 

The Parthenon was built during the “Golden Age of Pericles” to house a statue of Athena. The Temple of Hephaestus, built in the 5th century BC, was the first temple in Athens made entirely of marble, and it’s still remarkably intact.

If ruins aren’t the only thing on your list, you can skydive or bungee jump in Athens, or take a far calmer day trip sailing around the surrounding islands. I promise you’ll come away convinced that Greece has some of the most beautiful water in the world.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, and you’ll want to rent a car here too, since public transport is limited. There’s a good range of accommodation, from hotels to villas with private pools.

This island has some of the best beaches in Greece. Myrtos Beach is the standout, a dramatic stretch of pale sand backed by a sheer cliff, while Xi Beach on the south coast is known for its distinctive red sand.

Make the most of Kefalonia’s clear water with sea kayaking, or head inland for caving and canyoning if you’d rather keep your feet on the ground.

Dates typically land in late September through mid-October, though they’re not fully locked until closer to the event, so double-check before booking around it. Feast Of Agios Dimitrios

Thessaloniki’s patron saint is honoured every 26 October with a public holiday across the city. Schools, shops, and public services close, a large school parade takes place, and the Church of Agios Dimitrios itself draws thousands of pilgrims. Athens Authentic Marathon (Just Outside October)

Landing on 8 November 2026, this follows the original 490 BC route from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. Even if you’re not running, the city has a genuine buzz that weekend that’s worth catching if your dates are flexible, making November a great time to visit Greece too.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Just Outside October)

Confirmed for 5–15 November 2026, this is the biggest and most respected film festival in Greece, ten days of international premieres and retrospectives across Thessaloniki’s old waterfront cinemas. Worth extending your trip north for if you’re already planning to visit that end of the country.

Here’s something most people don’t associate with Greece: actual autumn colour. Athens, Ioannina, Thassos, Crete, and Zante all offer genuine fall foliage if you know where to look, a nice surprise if you’re picturing nothing but whitewashed buildings and blue sea.

October also lands you in the middle of Greece’s wine harvest season, which means vineyard visits across the country come with the added bonus of watching (or joining) the actual grape-picking.

Best Way To Get Around The Greek Islands

There’s no single best way to get around Greece; it depends on how many islands you’re covering, your budget, and how much time you have. Here’s how I’d actually break it down.

Ferries

For island-hopping, ferries are the default choice, and Greece has a genuinely confusing number of operators running the same routes at different speeds and prices. 

On a route like Piraeus to Santorini, for example, Blue Star Ferries runs conventional car ferries taking around 7–8 hours for roughly EUR 46–60 / USD 50–65, while SeaJets high-speed catamarans cover the same crossing in about 5 hours for closer to EUR 90–110 / USD 98–120. 

Blue Star doesn’t just win on price; its open decks give you the classic sail-into-the-caldera view that high-speed ferries don’t offer, since you’re kept inside.

If you’re bringing a rental car onto the ferry, stick to conventional operators like Blue Star, since most high-speed catamarans (SeaJets included) aren’t built to carry vehicles.

I’d only choose a flight over a ferry when the crossing would otherwise eat most of a travel day, think Athens to Rhodes or Crete, rather than short hops like Paros to Naxos where a ferry is faster door-to-door anyway.

Renting A Car

Once you’re actually on an island, especially somewhere like Crete, Kefalonia, or Corfu, a car is genuinely the only way to see anything beyond the main town. Public transport thins out fast once you’re away from the bigger towns, and a lot of the best beaches, gorges, and villages on this list simply aren’t reachable without your own wheels.

Private Boats And Sailing

For islands like Santorini, sailing on a chartered boat isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s genuinely one of the best ways to see the place, since so much of the caldera and coastline is only visible from the water. 

Local Buses And Taxis

Within a single town, or for a short hop to a nearby beach, local buses (KTEL) are cheap and reasonably reliable on the bigger islands, though timetables thin out considerably once you’re away from the main routes and almost disappear on Sundays. 

Taxis fill the gap where buses don’t run; agree on a price or confirm the meter is running before you set off, especially near ferry ports and tourist hotspots, where overcharging tourists is a known issue.
