The month of October is a good time to visit Greece, especially in 2024, when everyone is looking for an escape away from home and the pandemonium surrounding the world now.

The temperature is usually in the mid 20’s, there are fewer crowds, and you can often find cheaper prices for flights and accommodation.

The weather in Greece in October is fairly mild, as the average sea temperature still retains the heat from summer. The average temperature in Greece in October is 23ºC, which can fall to 14ºC at night.

The local food is fabulous everywhere in Greece so be sure to indulge at every chance that you get.

There are also many opportunities to experience wine that has been perfected over centuries so be sure to have a glass or two.

Below we share ideas on where to visit in Greece in October this 2024.

TRAVEL HACK:

As always, I find the best way to source for the cheapest flights is by checking on Google Flights & Skyscanner.

Why Visit Greece In October

Greece is a beautiful country with plenty to offer tourists and travellers all year round, but October may be the best time to go. If you’re looking for an extra special experience, October is the perfect month to visit!

When I told my friends I was going to Greece in October, they all looked at me like I was crazy. “Why would you want to go there then?” they asked. “It’s so hot and crowded!”

But for me, the idea of spending autumn in a country where the sun still shines brightly was too tempting to resist.

And they were right about one thing: it was hot.

But with the weather came fewer tourists, which meant that I could explore the ancient ruins and stunning beaches without having to elbow my way through crowds of people. The locals were also friendlier than usual, always willing to share a smile or recommend their favourite spot on the island.

Here are just a few reasons why visiting Greece in October is so special.

Weather in Greece in October

The weather is still warm, but not too hot, and the crowds are smaller than during peak season. The average weather in Greece in October is 20°C, with 12 hours of sunshine per day.

Sunset is around 7.10pm at the beginning of the month, and 5.30pm at the end of the month as daylight saving ends.

Athens gets an average temperature of 24ºC in the day and 14ºC at night.

Mykonos gets an average temperature of 22ºC in the day and 15ºC at night, with an average of 9 hours of daylight. The sea temperature is around 22°C. You’ll be delighted to know that Mykonos weather in October lets you make the best of summer by offering one of the longest summers in the Aegean Sea.

Crete gets an average temperature of 23ºC in the day and 14ºC at night, with an average of 7 hours of daylight. The sea temperature is around 22°C. You can expect a fair amount of rain, though the occasional storms clear up fast. That means  Corfu has relatively high humidity and nice breezes that’ll keep you cool when temperatures are high.

Experience Fall in Greece in October

Not only will you be able to enjoy the stunning autumn colours, but you’ll also get to take part in some of the many annual cultural events that take place. I bet you wouldn’t associate Greece with fall colours, but you can actually experience fall in certain islands – Athens, Ioanina, Thassos, Crete, and Zante are good examples of places where you can snap great photos.

Best Way To Get Around The Islands In Greece

If you’re already in Greece and are planning to do some island hopping around Greece, the easiest way to get around the Greek islands is by ferry.

Since there are many ferry companies that operate in Greece, I found Ferryscanner to aggregate the different ferry schedules and prices into one easy platform for comparison.

The best thing is, almost all of the ferry bookings made via their website has a free cancellation policy!

You can check the ferry schedule here:

It was awful and I’ve been too scared to try it again in October since then! The fact there were less crowds was ncie though, but for me, the weather is too hit and miss in October, or maybe we just go unlucky!
