[2026 GUIDE] 8 Best Sri Lanka National Parks You Won’t Want To Miss

By 10 June 2024 December 1st, 2025 No Comments

Sri Lanka may be a small island. But, it offers many opportunities to see unique biodiversity and wildlife. They’re not found anywhere else. When I spent 2 weeks there in April travelling around, I was absolutely blown away.

The parks cover 5,734 square kilometres (2,214 square miles). They contain 26 national parks. In the parks, you can see rainforests and ruins.

Sri Lanka’s national parks offer something for every nature lover. I was thrilled to get close to Sri Lankan elephants. I wanted to see them in their natural habitat. They would be feeding and caring for their babies.

Sri Lanka keeps me coming back because of its fantastic nature. It has safaris, hikes, mountains, and natural temples. You can go to Sri Lanka 100 times and still not see everything.

Here’s a guide to some of the top national parks to visit in Sri Lanka and everything you need to know to plan a safari there.

When To Plan Your Trip To Sri Lanka’s National Parks

Sri Lanka is known for having some of the best safaris in southeast Asia, where you can get up close to elephants and other animals. To make sure you’re getting the best experience and increase your chances of seeing all sorts of wildlife, you’ll want to do research on the seasons in each region.

Most safaris will advise you to go during the dry season, because animals will be out foraging for food and water. During the wet/monsoon seasons, it’s harder to spot the animals and they’ll hide from the rain.

The 2 monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka are the northeast monsoon season from October to January and the southwest monsoon season from May to July.

When To Go On A Safari In Sri Lanka

Elephant safari, Sri Lanka

The best time to go on a safari is the early morning or at sunset because these times are when animals are most active. It also means you’ll get a chance to witness a beautiful sunrise or sunset in the park.

When I took a 2 week trip to Sri Lanka in April, I went on a safari in Hurulu Eco Park one hot afternoon. At first, we’re in a part covered with trees and tall grass and saw a small handful of elephants with an obscured view. We saw them feeding on the grass and resting in the shade.

After we drove down the road to a more open area, the elephants were a lot more visible this time. There was a small group of 10 there, including some babies. The jeeps stayed a respectful distance away. But, when they approached us as they fed, we were able to get close to them. It was amazing!

Most group safari tours offer these times as 2 options. You can book a jeep tour to share with other tourists.

What tour you’ve booked depends on your location and what time of day you want to go, but here are some of my recommendations:
