Well, I quickly learned that things don’t always go as planned.
My flight got delayed (twice), I almost got stuck overnight in Surigao due to a ferry schedule mix-up, and let’s just say spending hours at a port with no clear updates wasn’t exactly the island escape I had imagined.
So if you’re planning your trip from Cebu to Siargao, you’ve got a few options: the fastest and easiest way is a direct flight, but it’s not always the cheapest or most reliable.
If you’re on a budget or flights are full, there’s also the ferry route via Surigao City, but it requires a bit more patience and planning.
If you’ve got some time to spare, I’d recommend adding Bohol to your route. It’s just a short ferry ride from Cebu and gives you a completely different side of the Philippines – think chocolate hills, lush jungle rivers, adorable tarsiers, and some of the best reef snorkelling I’ve ever done.
In this post, I’ll break down each transport option – costs, schedules, potential hiccups, and the little details I wish I’d known before making the trip.

Why Siargao, Philippines
Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the southeastern part of the Philippines, about 800 km from Manila. It sits on the edge of the Philippine Sea, with nothing but the wide Pacific Ocean beyond it.
It’s definitely a strange feeling standing on the beach and looking out at the view, knowing there’s nothing but open water until you reach another continent.
The island is best known as the surfing capital of the Philippines, home to Cloud 9, one of the most famous surf breaks in Asia.
But Siargao isn’t just for surfers.
The island has some of the clearest lagoons, quiet beaches, and winding roads lined with endless coconut trees. Alegria Beach, Magpupungko Rock Pools, and Sugba Lagoon are just a few of the must-visit spots. The pace here is slow, the people are friendly, and there’s a sense of freedom that makes it hard to leave.
Most travellers heading to Siargao pass through Cebu, one of the biggest transport hubs in the Philippines. Cebu has direct flights to Siargao, making it the most convenient jumping-off point.
When flights are full or expensive, the alternative is to travel by ferry via Surigao City, which takes longer but is a solid option for budget-conscious travellers.

All The Ways To Get From Cebu To Siargao, Philippines
When planning your trip from Cebu to Siargao, you’ll come across 2 main ways to get there: by plane or by ferry. Trust me when I say each option brings something different to the table, so here’s a deep dive into what you can expect from each.
1. By Plane – Fastest Option
Travel Time: Around 1 hour Cost: Starting from ₱1,300/ USD 25
Flying from Cebu to Siargao is the quickest, most straightforward option.
Mactan-Cebu International Airport is well-connected, offering direct flights to Sayak Airport on Siargao Island, with airlines like CebGo, Philippine Airlines, and Cebu Pacific providing regular services.
These flights typically cost around ₱1,300/ USD 25, and in my experience, booking in advance will save you money.
If you’re someone who values time, then this is hands down the best choice. The flight itself is only about 50 minutes to 1 hour, which means you’re quickly whisked away to paradise without wasting precious vacation time.
But a little heads-up: During high season, the prices can spike, especially if you’re booking last-minute. I learned this the hard way during one of my trips, where the flights I thought would be affordable turned out to be a lot pricier.
So, if your dates are locked in, it’s worth booking ahead to lock in those cheaper fares. I often found flights in the ₱2,200 – ₱2,700/ USD 40 – USD 50 range when booking a bit closer to departure, which was still a solid deal given the time saved.
That said, delays or cancelled flights do happen now and then – especially during typhoon season or at smaller airports. I’ve used AirHelp before and they make it super easy to see if you’re owed compensation. Super handy when travel plans suddenly shift.

Airlines Operating The Route
Several airlines offer direct flights between Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) and Sayak Airport (IAO) in Siargao. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from each:
Cebu Pacific
Type: Budget carrier Price Range: From ₱1,300/ USD 25, can go higher during peak seasons Frequency: Multiple daily flights Flight Time: 50 minutes
Cebu Pacific offers the most frequent flights to Siargao from Cebu, with options throughout the day. Since it’s a budget airline, the ticket prices are often affordable, especially if you book in advance.
You can expect basic service, but they do have options for upgrading your seat if you’re looking for a little extra comfort. You can also opt for extra services like baggage or seat selection.
CebGo (A subsidiary of Cebu Pacific)
Type: Budget carrier Price Range: Starts at around ₱1,300/ USD 25, though it can fluctuate Frequency: Several flights a day Flight Time: 50 minutes
CebGo operates on smaller aircraft compared to Cebu Pacific’s larger planes, but the service is quite similar.
Since they’re a subsidiary of Cebu Pacific, they offer the same affordable prices and frequent flight options, making it a great choice if you’re looking for budget-friendly travel. The only downside is that their smaller aircraft can sometimes feel a little cramped.
Philippine Airlines (PAL Express)
Type: Full-service airline Price Range: Starts at around ₱2,200 USD 40, but often goes up Frequency: 1 flight per day Flight Time: 50 minutes
If you’re looking for a more comfortable, full-service option, Philippine Airlines offers daily flights to Siargao. Their service includes complimentary meals and more spacious seating compared to the budget carriers, which can make for a more pleasant experience if you’re willing to pay a little extra.
While the ticket prices are higher, it’s a solid choice for those who want to experience better service and slightly more legroom.

2. By Ferry – Most Affordable Option
Travel Time: 10+ hours, depending on the ferry company Cost: Starting from ₱1,500/ USD 30
If you’ve got time on your side and want to keep your travel costs low, taking the ferry from Cebu to Siargao is a fantastic option. It’s definitely slower than flying, but it offers a unique, more laid-back travel experience with scenic views of the ocean.
The ferry ride isn’t direct, so you’ll have to make a stop in Surigao City, but the scenic journey is worth it if you’re open to it.
You’ll be crossing 2 different ferry routes, so it’s a bit of an adventure – one I actually enjoyed despite the longer travel time.
If you’re considering this route, check ferry schedules in advance, as they can change depending on the weather.

The trip is broken down into 2 segments:
Cebu To Surigao City
Travel Time: 21 hours Cost: Around ₱1,000/ USD 20 Ferry Companies: 2Go Travel, Starlite Ferries, 12Go
This is the longest leg of the journey, but it’s also an overnight ferry, so you get to rest and wake up in Surigao. You’ll board around 9:00 PM and arrive in Surigao the following morning. It’s kind of like a mini-cruise, with the sound of the ocean and the cool breeze.
Cabin Options: If you’re keen on a little more comfort, you can upgrade to a cabin with AC for an extra cost, but even the standard seats are decent if you don’t mind a little adventure.
I chose a standard seat and still had a fairly comfortable rest – there’s something oddly relaxing about being rocked to sleep by the waves.
Surigao City To Siargao (Dapa Port)
Travel Time: 1-2 hours Cost: Starting from ₱400/ USD 8 Ferry Companies: 2Go Travel, Montenegro Lines
After reaching Surigao, you’ll catch a quick ferry to Dapa, Siargao. The ride is much shorter – only 1 to 2 hours, but it’s the perfect way to wrap up your journey.
Once you reach Surigao, you’ll transfer to another ferry that will take you to Dapa Port on Siargao Island. This leg of the trip is a short one, lasting anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, and the price is very reasonable, starting at ₱250/ USD 5.
The second ferry is much smaller, and I remember enjoying the crystal-clear waters as we got closer to the island, seeing Siargao’s lush landscape emerge from the horizon.
All in all, the 10+ hours of travel can feel like a lot, and it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s a slower pace, and you have to be okay with the limited comfort (especially on the overnight ferry).
That said, if you love the idea of being off the beaten path and embracing local travel, it’s one of those experiences you’ll remember. For me, it was a chance to slow down and just take it all in.
Where To Book Ferry Tickets
Booking your ferry tickets from Cebu to Siargao is relatively easy with several options available, both online and at the ferry terminal.
Here are some of the most reliable and convenient platforms you can use:
1. 12Go
I’ve been using 12Go for years, and it’s one of my go-to platforms for ferry bookings in the Philippines. You can easily search for ferry schedules and book your tickets online. Prices typically start at around ₱1,500/ USD 28.
The platform also provides e-tickets, so you can skip the queues and head straight to the terminal with your phone or print out. I booked my last Cebu to Siargao ferry here for about ₱1,800/ USD 34, which was very reasonable.
Want to make your trip easier? Check out 12Go to compare schedules, book your tickets online, and avoid the hassle of long lines.

2. Individual Ferry Company Websites
Source
Booking directly through the ferry company’s official website, such as Starlite Ferries or Cokaliong Shipping, is also an option.
Sometimes, ferry companies offer better deals or discounts when booking directly. Websites usually allow you to view the ferry schedules, seating options, and booking details.
For instance, Cokaliong operates on this route, and their website provides details for booking tickets, including fare prices and special promotions.
3. Physical Ticketing
If you prefer to book in person, you can head directly to Cebu’s Pier 3 (where most ferries to Siargao depart from).
You can buy tickets from the ticket booths located in the terminal, but keep in mind that this might not be the best option if you’re travelling during peak times or holidays when ferries tend to get sold out.
It’s always safer to book your tickets in advance, especially during busy periods.
Cebu Port And Check-In Process: What To Expect
Now that you’ve got your ferry ticket sorted, here’s everything you need to know about the check-in process at Cebu Port:
Getting To Cebu Port (Pier 3)
Most ferries travelling to Siargao depart from Pier 3, which is one of the busiest ferry terminals in Cebu. If you’re coming from Cebu City, here’s how to get there:
By Taxi/Grab
I’ve always found the taxi or Grab ride to be the most convenient option. The terminal is about 20 to 30 minutes from Cebu City, and the fare is typically around ₱200/ USD 3.60.
If you’re unfamiliar with Cebu, I highly recommend Grab as it’s easy to use and will take you directly to the correct terminal. It’s the most comfortable and hassle-free choice, especially when you have luggage.
One tip: if you’re relying on maps or ride-hailing apps, having a reliable eSIM for the Philippines makes a huge difference. It saves you from scrambling for Wi-Fi and makes getting around so much easier.
By Jeepney
For those on a budget, you can hop on a jeepney heading towards Pier 3. It’s incredibly affordable, with fares as low as ₱10/ USD 0.18, but it’s definitely a different experience.
Jeepneys can be crowded, and they don’t always have space for larger luggage, so it’s not ideal if you’re carrying big bags or want a smooth ride.
I’ve done it before, and while it’s cheap, I wasn’t as comfortable as I’d have liked. Still, it’s a great way to save money if you don’t mind the crowd.
Terminal For Cebu-Surigao Route
For the Cebu to Surigao ferry route, the departure point is typically Pier 3 at Cebu Port. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check your ticket for any last-minute changes to the terminal or departure gate. This ensures you’re headed to the correct area, as sometimes there are small adjustments.
When you enter Pier 3, you’ll find the counters for Starlite Ferries and Cokaliong Shipping, the main ferry operators for the Cebu to Surigao route. Be sure to get in line for the correct counter based on your ferry company.
Check-In Process Before Boarding
Before you board your ferry, it’s essential to check in at least 1 hour before the scheduled departure.
During a previous trip, I had to hand over our big backpacks, which would then be stored on the boat. But on some occasions, passengers were allowed to keep their suitcases and bags with them for the entire journey. So, there was no need to give them to the staff during check-in – something I found more convenient.
The check-in starts with a security check, which is similar to what you’d experience at the airport. Don’t worry – you won’t need to take anything out of your bag for the inspection, so it’s pretty quick and straightforward.
Once you’ve passed security, you’ll exchange your online voucher for a physical boarding pass.
I departed from Cebu Port – Terminal 3, and although it’s not the largest terminal, it had everything we needed for a comfortable wait.
There were plenty of seating areas, so we didn’t have to stand, and several food stalls for grabbing a bite (I couldn’t resist some tasty doughnuts!). The bathrooms were also clean, and we appreciated the free electrical outlets available to charge phones or laptops.

Coron, Palawan
