The journey from Panama City to San Blas’ port for the water taxi typically takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Cost-wise, expect to pay approximately USD 60 for transportation, which includes the transport fee, an entrance fee of USD 20 to the Kuna region, and a USD 2 port tax for the boat.
To ensure a smooth journey, arrange transportation with a private transfer, available for as low as USD 13. Departing early in the morning, this option maximises your daylight hours, giving you more time to enjoy the beauty of the San Blas Islands.

By Sailboat
Embarking on a journey by sailboat offers a scenic and adventurous route to the San Blas Islands, particularly for those travelling between Cartagena, Colombia, and Panama City, Panama.
This option grants the opportunity to experience life at sea and witness stunning ocean views along the way. However, it’s important to note that the voyage can be challenging, especially during rough weather conditions.
Most trips last around 5 days, with 2 full days spent sailing the open ocean.

For a faster and more direct route to San Blas, consider taking a ferry from Capurganá, Colombia to Turbo.
Although Capurganá may not offer the same accessibility as Cartagena, it’s still a viable option. Begin your journey by taking an overnight bus from Medellín to Turbo. Once you arrive in Turbo, you can catch a 2 hour ferry ride to San Blas in the morning.
By Plane
For those seeking a faster and more comfortable journey, flying to the San Blas Islands is an option, albeit at a higher cost.
Air Panama offers flights from Panama City to various landing spots around the islands.
The cost of flights with Air Panama typically starts at around USD 155 for a round trip, although prices may vary depending on the time of booking and availability.
