Wellington is easily one of my favourite cities ever! New Zealand‘s cool little capital is renowned for more than just its wind. It’s also famous for its thriving food scene. This city is at the southern edge of the North Island. It is a mix of cultures, foods, and, most importantly, an unmatched coffee culture.

If you’re heading to the South Island after the North Island, spend time in Wellington if you can.

After just a month in the city, I’ve grown to love this multicultural capital. It has a vibrant arts scene, diverse people, great food, and a passion for coffee. New Zealand has many treasures, and Wellington is definitely one of them!

Wellington has a busy port city. This has been key to shaping its food. The arrival of immigrants over the years has brought a rich mix of flavours and dishes. This made the city New Zealand’s top spot for food.

Wellington’s restaurants serve a global feast. They range from traditional Kiwi brunch spots to innovative fine dining. The food is bound to tantalise your taste buds.

1. 1154 Pastaria

The last time I was at 1154 Pastaria, a popular spot on Cuba Street known for its fresh, handmade pasta, I timed my visit just right. It was to take advantage of their weekday NZ 10 / USD 7.50 special from 4pm – 6pm. It turned out to be a great dining decision.

The atmosphere is modern yet inviting: a bright and airy space with large windows letting in plenty of natural light. There’s an open kitchen where you could see the chefs at work, skillfully preparing each dish.

For the NZ 10 / USD 7.50 special, I chose the classic Spaghetti Pomodoro. The spaghetti was perfectly cooked to al dente. The fresh tomato sauce was bursting with flavour. It was topped with a sprinkle of parmesan and a few fresh basil leaves. It was a simple but satisfying meal. The quality of the ingredients and the care in preparation were evident in every bite.

Don’t forget to order a side of garlic bread as I found it to be the perfect accompaniment, allowing me to soak up every last bit of the delicious sauce!

I particularly loved 1154 Pastaria. It had a sense of community and a focus on simple, high-quality food. The NZ 10 / USD 7.50 special is on weekdays. It’s a fantastic deal that offers a taste of their expertly crafted pasta at a very low price.

Dining at 1154 Pastaria was a delightful experience. The meal was a standout during my time in Wellington. It had delicious, homemade pasta. It also had a welcoming atmosphere and excellent value.

2. Fred’s Sandwiches

Fred’s is a true gem for sandwich lovers, me included!

I believe that the best sandwiches are often the simplest, letting the freshness and quality of the bread and ingredients take centre stage, and that’s exactly what Fred’s does.

Each bite of their sandwiches offers mouthwatering flavours that are straightforward yet incredibly satisfying. The unpretentious nature of their food speaks volumes about their commitment to delivering pure, culinary delight.

Their menu consists of the classics, and they do have a weekly special where they get creative – you’ll never be short of choices.

Locals love the Panko and Togarashi Crumbed Chicken and while that is amazing, I do love the Romesco and Buffalo Mozzarella and the Rare Roast Beef as well. Complemented with a cup of coffee, Fred’s is definitely one of my favourite albeit simple meals here!

3. Fidel’s Cafe

A visit to Fidel’s Cafe is a must, a beloved spot on Cuba Street known for its laid-back vibe and eclectic menu. I walked in and felt enveloped by the cosy, bohemian atmosphere. It had mismatched furniture, vintage posters, and a lively buzz of conversation.

This made it clear this was a local favourite. I found a seat on the outdoor patio, a perfect spot for people-watching in the sun. The patio was vibrant and inviting. It had colourful murals and lots of greenery. These added to the relaxed, eclectic charm of the place.

For breakfast, I tried Fidel’s Big Breakfast. The portion was generous as the plate was truly loaded! The food was not exceptional. But, every bite was delicious, hearty, and satisfying. It was exactly what I needed to start my day.

With my meal, I ordered a cup of their famous Havana coffee. The rich, robust flavour of the coffee was truly exceptional, living up to its reputation. I could see why Fidel’s has a loyal following. The coffee alone is worth the visit.

Or, you might just want a place to relax and soak in the local culture. In any case, Fidel’s is a must-visit. My experience there was memorable and delicious. I left feeling like I’d truly seen a piece of Wellington’s heart and soul.

4. Rita

During my stay in Wellington, I ate a great meal at Rita, a small restaurant in the Aro Valley. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for something special. The restaurant is in a charming, renovated cottage. It creates a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

As I walked through the door, I was greeted by the friendly staff who immediately made me feel welcome. The interior was warm and tastefully decorated, with soft lighting and wooden accents that added to the intimate ambiance.

Rita offers a set menu that changes regularly, focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients. For an idea of what’s going to be served, their website details what was served the night before. This evening, the menu had three courses. They were each made to highlight the best of what local producers had. Each course was beautifully presented with a combination of flavours expertly balanced.

Throughout the evening, the service at Rita was impeccable. The staff were knowledgeable and passionate about the food. They provided great wine pairings and shared insights about the ingredients and how they prepared them. Their enthusiasm added to the overall experience, making me feel like a valued guest.

The dining experience at Rita is both intimate and extraordinary. I highly recommend making a reservation there. It’s a culinary gem that truly showcases the best of Wellington’s vibrant food scene.

5. Pizza Pomodoro

Pizza Pomodoro has been a haven for Neapolitan pizza lovers since 2000. You know it’s authentic when the chef himself is from Naples!

The pizzeria takes pride in its traditional wood-fired pizzas, featuring dough that’s tender and moist, topped with a light, airy crust—qualities that instantly whisk you away to Naples with every bite.

Isn’t it amazing that despite being literally on the other side of the world, almost 20,000km away, we’re able to get authentic Neapolitan pizza here?

If you still have room for dessert after devouring the pizzas, you have to try the WCF Calzone. It’s a folded pizza filled with Nutella custard and “Wellington Chocolate Factory” chocolate. The Wellington Chocolate Factory is handcrafted in Wellington, a local bean to bar factory and is famous for their top grade chocolate.

6. Little Penang

Little Penang celebrates the flavors of Malaysia. It serves authentic dishes that pack a punch. The vibrant, bustling atmosphere complements the spicy, aromatic plates. It is a must-visit for those looking to explore Southeast Asian cuisine.

What boggles my mind is that the dishes here are pretty affordable. Their prices are around USD 12, but the portions served are generous!

Coming from Southeast Asia myself, I’ve been a little deprived of the cuisine coming to this side of the world. The menu at Little Penang was filled with a variety of tempting dishes, posing a challenge as to what dishes to order.

I decided to start with the Roti Canai, a classic Malaysian flatbread served with a side of curry sauce. The roti was perfectly flaky and buttery, and the curry sauce was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of spice.

For the main dish, I opted for the Laksa, which Little Penang is renowned for. Each component of the dish was bursting with flavour, and together they created a harmonious balance of sweet, spicy, and savoury. I find that there’s nothing like a hot bowl of Asian noodles and curry that really soothes the soul!

For dessert, I had to try the Ais Kacang. It’s a popular Malaysian shaved ice dessert. It was a delightful mix of sweet red beans, jelly, and corn, topped with a generous serving of shaved ice and drizzled with syrup and condensed milk. It was a refreshing and fun way to end the meal.

My dining experience at Little Penang was truly memorable. The real flavors, welcoming atmosphere, and great service made it a standout meal. If you’re looking to enjoy delicious, comforting and homely Malaysian cuisine, Little Penang is a must-visit.

7. Ortega Fish Shack

Ortega Fish Shack is a testament to Wellington’s coastal location. Located in the heart of the city, Ortega has a charming, eclectic vibe that immediately drew me in. Specialising in seafood, this bistro-style restaurant offers a warm, nautical-themed environment where every dish is a celebration of the ocean’s bounty.

Upon entering, you’ll notice the decor: a delightful mix of nautical themes and vintage touches. It creates such a fun and relaxed environment. The walls, adorned with quirky art pieces and maritime memorabilia, give the place a unique character.

Their menu evolves daily, reflecting what’s fresh and available in the season. Choosing what to order is always a dilemma for me because everything on their menu is tantalising! For that, they do have different set menu options as well that caters to different budgets.

For my appetiser, I chose the ceviche, made with the freshest catch of the day. The fish was tender and flavorful, marinated in a zesty citrus dressing with just the right amount of spice. It was served with crispy chips that provided a satisfying crunch with each bite. Ceviche is always a must order for me whenever it’s on the menu, and this one definitely did not disappoint.

Other standouts that are worth the mention are the green-lipped mussels, snapper and octopus. Seafood is usually difficult to execute perfectly but these are ranked among the finest seafood dishes I’ve ever enjoyed, moist and not a touch overcooked.

Dining at Ortega Fish Shack was an absolute delight. The combination of fresh, flavorful seafood, a vibrant atmosphere, and top-notch service made it one of the best dining experiences I had in Wellington. If you’re a seafood lover looking for a memorable meal in a lively setting, Ortega Fish Shack is a must-visit.

8. Midnight Espresso

Midnight Espresso on Cuba Street offers an eclectic menu that caters to all. This bustling, bohemian cafe serves everything from vegan treats to hearty comfort food alongside their signature coffee brews.

The interior is pretty quirky and gives off a gypsy-meets-retro vibe. It is ridden with old school artefacts such as a Pac-Man arcade machine that was displaying under my table and even a pinball machine.

Stepping inside for the first time, I was overwhelmed (and you will be too, trust me!) by the delightful and extensive selection of offerings. There were literal stacks of sandwiches, quiches, pies, scones and cakes displayed, not to mention a whole list of items on their menu you can order from as well.

My advice would be to have a good look at the array before heading to place your order! Speaking from experience, I did have to spend a considerable amount of time studying the selection and would have been overwhelmed if I’d gone straight to the counter.

For the night owls and those with late-night cravings, this cafe actually stays open until the wee hours of 12am!

Pour & Twist is a very intimate cafe that stands out for its unique approach to coffee. Here, the owners take personal pride in crafting each cup with care and precision, using hand-brewing techniques that showcase their passion for quality coffee.

Engaging with the owners, you’ll find they’re eager to share their coffee knowledge or just have a simple chat about your day, making Pour & Twist more than just a cafe—it’s a community hub where every visit feels like catching up with friends.

This cafe is not just for the coffee purists; they have also come up with an innovative menu of drinks that appeals to a wide range of tastes. I’ve tried the Grey Marble and Nitro Matcha, both of which were delicious and unlike anything I’ve had before!

Whether you’re in the mood for something rich and traditional or light and refreshing, Pour & Twist has a hand-brewed concoction that’s sure to delight and cabinet pastries to go with it.

10. Garage Project Taproom: 91 Aro

No visit to Wellington is complete without sampling some local craft beer, and Garage Project’s Te Aro taproom is the place to do it.

What started as a small brewery has grown into a cult favourite, with an adventurous range of beers that push the boundaries of traditional brewing.

Every time I step into Garage Project, I’m overwhelmed by the eclectic array of beers and flavours on offer. The choice leaves me indecisive because everything sounds and tastes so appealing, making it a challenge to sample them all! My personal favourite, though perhaps not to everyone’s taste, is the Pickle Beer. It lives up to its name, offering a delightful hit of strong pickle juice with an unexpected punch.

Also, don’t overlook their cheese plates. They’re deceptively simple, featuring the finest ingredients, with bread from the local Aro Bakery stealing the show. The enticing aroma from a neighbouring table’s cheese plate was enough to convince me to order one. I still think about that very cheese plate till this day!

11. Olive

Olive, a charming restaurant tucked away on Cuba Street, quickly became a highlight of my visit. Offering a serene oasis in the middle of the bustling street, Olive exudes a cosy yet sophisticated atmosphere that makes you feel right at home the moment you step inside.

I was greeted by the warm, rustic decor featuring wooden tables, lush greenery, and soft, ambient lighting. The setting was perfect for a relaxed, intimate dining experience. I was lucky to snag a table near the back, where large windows overlooked a quaint, leafy courtyard that added a touch of tranquillity to the urban setting.

The menu at Olive is a delightful fusion of contemporary New Zealand cuisine with Mediterranean influences. For starters, I opted for the warm beetroot salad which was a perfect balance of flavours and textures, and it set the tone for the rest of the meal.

For the main course, I chose the lamb rump, which came beautifully presented with a side of creamy cauliflower puree. The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, with a rich, savoury jus that complemented the dish wonderfully.

The service at Olive was impeccable throughout the evening. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring that every detail of the dining experience was just right.

I went for dinner but Olive offers breakfast, brunch and lunch options as well with completely different menus. My experience was so good I’m wanting to return to try out the other menus as well!

12. The Larder

It is beside the picturesque Miramar Peninsula. The Larder serves dishes that are as delightful to look at as they are to eat.

Both owners work hard to build and keep close relationships. They do this with their growers and suppliers. They focus strongly on ethical eating. They practise the ‘nose to tail eating’ philosophy. It values using and honouring all parts of the animal.

It’s a perfect place for brunch. And, if you’re up for it, drinks. The Larder has both well-presented cabinet food and a delicious menu. And, the prices are really affordable! I always choose buttermilk pancakes if they’re on the menu. This one definitely didn’t disappoint. It had the perfect balance between fluffy and dense.

A bonus that it’s under USD 12.50 as well! The pappardelle with lamb meatballs was also perfectly cooked. The sauce was rich with flavour but did not overpower the strong lamb flavour. It’s a great option for a hearty meal.

Don’t forget to round off your meal with a cup of their delicious coffee to kickstart your day!
