If you’ve used an eSIM before, you must think you know which is best.
Pick a brand, buy a plan, scan the QR code at the airport. Job done. What you don’t always think about is what’s actually underneath the plan, which network it runs on, whether that network covers the regions they’re actually visiting, and whether the “unlimited” label means what they think it means.
That’s where SIMOVO sits differently.
SIMOVO is a UK-based eSIM provider launched in 2025 by Planet Telecom, covering 180+ countries across 6 continents.
It partners directly with local service providers in each destination rather than routing everything through a single international wholesale network — which means your phone connects at the same quality level as a local subscriber, not through a secondary roaming arrangement.
I used SIMOVO on a cross-country road trip across the US, rented a car and drove from Los Angeles through Utah and into New York with a detour up to Toronto.
No roaming warnings crossing the border into Canada, no signal drops on long highway stretches, no need to swap plans mid-trip.
For a trip that covered that much ground and 2 countries, the consistency stood out.
Whether SIMOVO is the right eSIM for your trip depends on where you’re going and how you travel. Here’s a full breakdown.
Use code ISABEL10 for 10% off.
What Is An eSIM And How Does It Work?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile embedded directly into your phone, no physical card, no swapping, no searching for a SIM ejector pin in the bottom of your bag at the airport.
Instead of buying a local SIM at a kiosk after landing, you receive a QR code by email after purchase, scan it from your phone’s settings, and your eSIM is installed.
Once installed, your phone treats the eSIM identically to a physical SIM. The practical difference is everything is managed digitally, from activation to top-ups, which you can do mid-trip without buying a new eSIM or reinstalling anything.
The other useful aspect: most modern phones support multiple eSIM profiles simultaneously. You keep your home number active on one profile — for calls, banking apps, two-factor authentication, anything tied to your home number — while running SIMOVO’s data plan on the other.
One thing worth understanding before choosing any regional plan: not all eSIMs connect to the same network infrastructure, and depending on where you’re travelling, that distinction matters more than price per GB.

What Is SIMOVO eSIM?
SIMOVO is a UK-based eSIM provider launched in 2025 by Planet Telecom, a company that already runs several established telecom brands in the UK, which means it isn’t a startup building from scratch.
It covers 180+ countries across 6 continents with both fixed data and unlimited plans, connecting through local carrier partnerships in each destination rather than routing everything through a single international wholesale network.
How Does SIMOVO Work?
The setup is the same as any modern eSIM.
You buy a plan on their website, receive a QR code by email within seconds of purchase, and scan it from your phone’s settings. The eSIM installs onto your device as a second SIM profile — your home number stays active on your primary SIM for calls, banking OTPs, and anything tied to your home number, while SIMOVO handles data on the second profile.
No SIM card swaps, no airport kiosk queues, no passport registration.
The plan activates automatically when you first connect to a supported network at your destination — not at the point of purchase. So you can buy weeks in advance without losing any of your plan’s validity. The 180-day activation window gives you a lot of flexibility on timing.
Once you’re connected, everything runs through the local partner network in whichever country you’re in.
Top-ups on fixed data plans apply to the same profile without reinstalling — add more data through the website, and it’s active within seconds.
Why Network Matters
Most travel eSIMs operate as international roaming services. Your phone attaches to a local carrier’s network, but through a secondary arrangement rather than as a direct local subscriber.
This works fine in major cities where every carrier has strong infrastructure. The gap shows up when you leave the tourist corridor — remote areas, mountain roads, smaller islands, long rural transfers.
SIMOVO partners directly with local service providers in each country. Your phone connects at the same level as a local subscriber, which means you get the same coverage that network offers to its own customers.
The sections below break down every regional plan of SIMOVO’s, the specific networks SIMOVO run on, and what to expect from each in terms of real-world performance, so you can make your own fair judgement of SIMOVO!
What I Like About SIMOVO eSIM
No Fair Use Throttling On Fixed Data Plans
This is the one that actually changes your day-to-day experience, and most people don’t realise it until they’re already throttled.
I found out the hard way. Somewhere on a long driving day between Las Vegas and Utah, my previous roaming eSIM quietly dropped speeds without warning.
Maps wouldn’t load fast enough to be useful. A booking confirmation I needed wouldn’t open. Technically still connected — practically useless for the next 2 hours until I found WiFi at a gas station.
Most “unlimited” travel eSIMs — Holafly, Airalo’s unlimited tiers — quietly drop speeds after hitting internal usage thresholds. The fine print exists. Nobody reads it until Google Maps starts buffering on a mountain road.
SIMOVO’s fixed data plans don’t work like that. You buy a specific amount of data, it runs at full speed until it’s gone, you top up if needed. No fair use policy running in the background. The 10 GB I bought for my US trip performed the same on day 1 as it did on day 12.
SIMOVO does offer unlimited plans too — and to their credit, they’re upfront about how they work: a daily high-speed allowance that resets at midnight, then reduced speeds. It’s explained clearly at purchase rather than buried in a footnote. That transparency alone puts them ahead of most competitors.
Hotspot That Actually Works
Holafly caps hotspot at 500 MB per day — under an hour of laptop use. SIMOVO doesn’t impose a daily hotspot cap on fixed data plans. You share what you have.
I worked remotely for a full morning in a café in Koh Phangan with no decent WiFi, running back-to-back video calls off my phone’s SIMOVO hotspot. No interruptions, no speed drops mid-call. The kind of morning where a capped hotspot would have cost me 2 clients’ worth of patience.
Caveat: hotspot speed drops in lower-signal areas — that’s network geography, not a plan restriction. In Ubud’s outskirts or rural Egypt, you’ll get what the local network gives you. Download what you need before heading somewhere remote.
Flexible Plan Lengths — 7 Days to 180 Days
Most providers stop at 30 days. SIMOVO goes up to 180 days on Europe and North America plans.
I spent an extended stretch across Europe last year — 4 months moving between France, Italy, and Spain — and the idea of repurchasing a new eSIM every 30 days was exhausting just to think about.
The 50 GB / 180-day Europe plan at USD 60.20 works out to USD 0.33/day, and you stop thinking about your eSIM entirely. That mental overhead reduction is worth more than it sounds after month 2. (More on the Regional Plan breakdown below)
The Data Calculator
Before buying, SIMOVO’s website has a data calculator where you adjust sliders for your daily habits — maps, social media, video calls, streaming, messaging — input your trip length, and get a recommended plan.
I used it before my US trip and landed at 10 GB for 2 weeks. I used 8.4 GB. Didn’t overpay for a 20 GB plan I didn’t need, didn’t run out with 3 days to go.
It’s a small feature that reflects a provider actually thinking about the traveller’s experience rather than just pushing the most expensive plan.
Top-Up Without Reinstalling
Running low mid-trip means adding data to the same eSIM profile — no new QR code, no reinstall, no reconfiguring settings.
I hit 80% on my Europe plan faster than expected during a stretch of heavy uploads in Barcelona. Topped up in about 90 seconds from my phone’s browser. Data applied immediately.
The alternative — buying a new eSIM, reinstalling, going through setup — would have taken 20 minutes I didn’t have while trying to catch a train.
Human Support On WhatsApp And Live Chat
UK-based, human, responsive. Not a bot, not a 48-hour ticket queue.
Before my Asia trip, I had a question about whether the plan would work across both mainland China and Hong Kong without reinstalling. Got a reply on WhatsApp in under 10 minutes with a clear, specific answer. That kind of turnaround when you’re mid-planning is genuinely useful.
What I Don’t Like About SIMOVO eSIM
Unlimited Plan Caps Require Attention

Shirakawa-go, Ishikawa, Japan
The daily high-speed cap on lower unlimited tiers — some as low as 500 MB or 1 GB per day — is real and worth knowing before buying.
I tested the unlimited plan on my Japan trip, video calls in the morning, uploading content in the afternoon, Google Maps running constantly in between. Hit the daily cap by around 2 pm.
The reduced speed after that was enough for messaging and basic maps, but not for anything heavier. For a typical sightseeing day, it was fine. For a remote work day, it wasn’t.
The higher-tier unlimited plans with 3–10 GB/day high-speed allowances handle heavy use better, but cost accordingly.
For anything data-intensive, compare Saily’s unlimited structure before committing. For fixed data, SIMOVO is consistently better value.
Data Only — No Local Number
No calls, no SMS. Everything runs through WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom.
For most trips this is fine. Where it caught me: trying to book a local restaurant in rural France that didn’t use any messaging apps and only took reservations by phone.
Minor inconvenience, but worth knowing upfront if your itinerary involves a lot of local bookings or services that expect a phone number for confirmation.
If you’re looking for a local number, check out:
Airhub App: Data + Voice + SMS plans include a real local number with unlimited minutes, not VoIP, an actual number that works for local bookings, SMS verification, and anything requiring a local mobile. Available for France, Mexico, Philippines, Europe regional, and others.
Saily eSIM: Worth noting: it’s a US +1 number, not a local number for whichever country you’re visiting. Useful for 2FA, keeping your primary number private, and app sign-ups while travelling.
Holafly Plans: the monthly subscription at USD 64.90/month includes calls and SMS alongside unlimited data globally. If you need both unlimited data and communication capabilities for an extended trip, it’s the most complete single plan available, and it removes the hotspot cap that applies to Holafly’s standard plans.
No App
Everything is browser and email-based. No push notifications, no in-app usage dashboard, no quick top-up button.
After using Airalo and Ubigi’s apps where I can check remaining data at a glance, the browser-only experience feels like a step back.
Not a dealbreaker — I checked usage via email and the website — but it’s a friction point that shouldn’t exist in 2026.
Strict Refund Policy After Activation
Once the QR code is scanned and the plan is active, refunds are difficult.
I activated mine at home before travelling to test it — which is the right approach and SIMOVO recommends it — but if you activate abroad and discover a coverage issue in your specific area, you’re navigating that through support rather than an automatic refund.
Some competitors offer credit for unused data at plan expiry. SIMOVO currently doesn’t.
Activate early, test before you travel, and buy the right plan size using the data calculator.
How SIMOVO Differs From Other eSIMs
Most eSIM providers fall into 2 camps: the big marketplaces like Airalo that aggregate plans from dozens of operators, or the unlimited-focused providers like Holafly that push one plan type hard. SIMOVO sits in neither of those camps, which is actually the point.
SIMOVO vs Airalo eSIM
Airalo is a marketplace, when you buy a plan, you’re buying from whichever third-party operator Airalo has listed for that country. Quality varies significantly between operators, and the plan you buy in one country might perform very differently from the one you bought for the previous country.
SIMOVO works directly with local partners and maintains consistent quality standards across its catalogue rather than listing whatever’s available.
SIMOVO vs Holafly eSIM
Holafly’s unlimited plan is the product — you either want unlimited or you don’t. If you’re a light or moderate data user, you’re overpaying for data you won’t use.
SIMOVO offers both fixed and unlimited plans, which means you pay for what you actually need. The fixed data plans run at full speed with no fair-use throttling — the data you paid for behaves the same on day 1 as it does on day 14.
The feature that genuinely stands out: the unlimited plan structure is honest about how it works.
A set daily high-speed allowance, 2 GB/day on most destination plans — that resets at midnight, then reduced speeds for the rest of the day. No undisclosed throttle kicking in after an unspecified usage threshold. No “unlimited” asterisk that contradicts itself in the fine print. What’s stated is what happens.
The data calculator on the website is another feature no other major eSIM provider offers at this level. Input your daily habits — maps, social media, video calls, streaming — and your trip length, and it outputs a recommended plan size. I used it before my US trip and landed within 15% of my actual usage. Small detail, big practical difference.
How Much Data Do I Actually Need?
Use SIMOVO’s data calculator before buying. Move sliders for maps, social media, video calls, streaming, messaging — input your trip length — get a recommended plan.
I’ve used it for 3 trips now and it’s consistently landed me within 15–20% of my actual usage, which is close enough to avoid the 2 most common mistakes: buying too little and running out, or buying twice what you need.
Rough benchmarks from actual use:
Light user — maps, WhatsApp, quick Instagram checks, relying on hotel or café WiFi for anything heavier: 3–5 GB gets you through 1–2 weeks without stress. You’re not streaming, not on video calls, not uploading anything. Data is just there for navigation and staying in touch.
Typical user — daily Google Maps, social media scrolling, WhatsApp throughout the day, the occasional video call home: 10 GB covers 2 weeks comfortably for most people. This is the plan I land on most often and rarely come close to exhausting.
Heavy user — regular video calls for work, hotspotting a laptop for a few hours a day, uploading photos and content, streaming on the go rather than on hotel WiFi: 20 GB for 2 weeks, or push to 30 GB if you know you’ll be hotspotting consistently. Running a laptop off your phone’s hotspot for a full work day can burn through 3–5GB before lunch depending on what you’re doing.
Digital nomad / remote worker — video calls all day, laptop running off hotspot, uploading large files, no fixed office WiFi to fall back on: unlimited plan or 50 GB+ for anything longer than a week. Fixed data plans at this usage level require constant monitoring and you’ll be topping up regularly, which adds up.
SIMOVO Regional Plans
Africa eSIM
1 eSIM covers 29 African destinations without reinstalling or buying a new plan at each border.
For multi-country trips — Morocco into West Africa, or Kenya south to Tanzania and Zambia — the same QR code keeps working across all covered destinations as you move.
Network performance across Africa varies more than it does in Europe or Asia, and that’s worth being upfront about. In major cities and tourist corridors — Cairo, Casablanca, Nairobi, Cape Town, Lagos — coverage is strong and speeds are consistent. Once you move into rural areas or smaller islands, performance depends heavily on which local carrier is available at that specific location.
Worth knowing: a handful of destinations still run on 3G infrastructure — Ghana and Central African Republic specifically. If fast data matters for your trip in those countries, factor that in before buying.
Plans:
- 1 GB for 7 days — USD 10.20 (USD 10.20/GB)
- 3 GB for 30 days — USD 23.70 (USD 7.90/GB)

Asia eSIM
Asia is where SIMOVO’s local network partnership approach makes the biggest practical difference. Coverage spans 20 destinations across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia — and the network quality varies considerably between them.
We’ve compared the best eSIM for Asia here.
Japan and South Korea are the strongest performers on this plan. Japan runs on all 4 major domestic carriers simultaneously — KDDI, SoftBank, Rakuten, and NTT Docomo — which means automatic switching to the strongest available signal across the country, including in rural prefectures and mountain areas where single-carrier eSIMs struggle. South Korea delivers similarly on SKTelecom and LG U+.
China is covered on China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile simultaneously. This is the plan to use for mainland China, covering VPN too.
Singapore connects on StarHub and M1 at 4G rather than 5G — worth knowing if 5G speeds specifically matter for your time there.
Plans:
- 1 GB for 7 days — USD 7.20 (USD 7.20/GB)
- 3 GB for 15 days — USD 15.50 (USD 5.16/GB)
- 5 GB for 30 days — USD 22.40 (USD 4.48/GB)
- 10 GB for 30 days — USD 37.90 (USD 3.79/GB)

Europe eSIM
Europe is SIMOVO’s strongest regional plan in terms of coverage depth and value per GB. 34 countries including every major EU destination, plus the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, and Ukraine on the same plan.
We’ve compared the best eSIM for Europe here.
Switzerland and the UK being included matters more than it sounds. Both sit outside EU roaming rules, and a significant number of “Europe eSIMs” from other providers quietly exclude one or both. If your trip crosses from France into Switzerland or involves any time in the UK, you want to confirm inclusion before buying — SIMOVO includes both.
Performance across Western and Northern Europe is consistently strong, with 5G available on multiple carrier options per country in France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, and the Nordics.
Spain runs on Vodafone and Orange at 4G rather than 5G — the only major Western European destination not reaching 5G on this plan. Slovakia is similarly 4G only.

Middle East eSIM
UAE connects on Etisalat, one of the stronger networks in the Gulf with consistent 5G across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain all run on STC 5G. Jordan is 4G only on Zain, and Azerbaijan splits between Bakcell 5G and Azercell 4G depending on location.
One important note for UAE specifically: VoIP calling (WhatsApp voice, FaceTime, Zoom) is restricted by UAE regulations regardless of which eSIM you use. This is a country-level rule, not a SIMOVO limitation — plan accordingly if voice calls matter for your time there.
Plans:
- 1 GB for 7 days — USD 12.60 (USD 12.60/GB)

3 countries — USA, Canada, and Mexico — on 1 plan.
The US connects on T-Mobile 5G and Verizon 5G — 2 of the 3 strongest networks in the country with complementary coverage footprints.
T-Mobile leads on rural coverage and highway stretches; Verizon is stronger in certain urban markets and building penetration. Having both available on automatic switching is a meaningful advantage over single-carrier US eSIMs.

Brazil connects on TIM 5G rather than Claro, which is worth knowing if Brazil is a significant part of your itinerary. Chile runs on WOM 5G and Colombia on Movistar 5G — both solid performers in their respective markets.

Should You Get SIMOVO?
For most trips of 1–4 weeks across Europe, North America, or Asia — yes, on a fixed data plan.
I’ve used SIMOVO across the US, parts of Europe, and Asia. The connection consistency on fixed data plans, the hotspot reliability, and the top-up process are all noticeably better than the roaming eSIM I used before switching.
The data calculator gets you to the right plan without guessing. The human support is there when something doesn’t go to plan.
The honest caveats: data-only means no local number, unlimited plans need careful attention before buying, no app, and the refund policy is strict after activation.
None of those is a dealbreaker for most trips — just things worth knowing in advance rather than discovering mid-trip.
If you want connectivity that works without surprises, SIMOVO is a solid, transparent pick.
