How To Get To Central Bohemia, Czech Republic

Town of Kolin
How do you get to Central Bohemia, you may ask. It’s fairly easy. Depending on which town you want to get into, the easiest way to get to Central Bohemia region is by aeroplane to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.
From there, you can take a train, or bus or rent a car, and within 2 hours from Prague, you’ll be in Central Bohemia.
The train is the most convenient way to get around the Czech Republic. It’s comfortable and reliable. The only caveat is, you’ll have to be able to handle your luggage weight as there’s a lot of stair climbing to the platforms and then your luggage will have to fit above the train seats if possible, as the luggage compartments have limited spaces.

Here are some of the top things to do when visiting Central Bohemia.
1. Sedlec Ossuary
This ossuary is one of the most unique attractions in Central Bohemia, located near Kutná Hora. It’s an underground chapel that was built in the 15th century, filled with more than 40,000 human skulls and bones.
This 1000-year-old church holds the bones of those who died in past wars, plagues, famines, and the Christian martyrs who died hiding inside it. This ossuary is a world-renowned site and shouldn’t be missed for its medieval gothic architecture. Today, it’s a macabre but fascinating tourist attraction, a chilling reminder of the past.

2. GASK | Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region
“Art is what makes life more interesting than art”, says the curator who showed us around this ex-military base.
At the very first glance, who wouldn’t be fascinated by the wonderful architectural design of the GASK gallery? This modern art gallery offers a place to admire art within the walls of its beautiful architecture. Both inside and out of this magnificent infrastructure is a sight to behold, and the gallery offers an exciting insight into the region’s contemporary arts.
Walking through the rooms, you can notice the dialogue between contemporary art and the spirit of where we are. GASK is surrounded by symbolism in the realms of fine art, literature, and avant-garde. It’s well known for its Central Bohemian art collections, offering something for everyone ranging from traditional Czech crafts to experimental contemporary artwork.
They also hold diverse exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events throughout the year that you can be a part of.
This place is the perfect stop for art enthusiasts and it’s also conveniently located in central Kutna Hora.

3. St Barbara’s Cathedral
St Barbara’s Cathedral is a breathtaking sight in Central Bohemia. This 13th-century cathedral is an impressive structure with its large dome and intricate stone carvings. It’s also the site of some stunning art, including works by renowned Czech artists such as Karel Spillar and František Bílek.
The cathedral is Central Bohemia’s most visited monument and a great place to explore Central Bohemia’s history and culture. Visitors can also take in the stunning views of Central Bohemia from its terrace, making it an ideal spot for admiring Central Bohemia’s countryside.

4. Italian Court
The Italian Court is an impressive sight in Central Bohemia. This 16th-century palace was built by the Duke of Wurttemberg and features some stunning architecture, such as its grand staircase and Renaissance-style frescoes. It also boasts a beautiful garden with a large selection of plants and trees.
This palace offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore Central Bohemia’s history and culture. It’s also the perfect place for admiring Central Bohemia’s countryside, with its terrace offering stunning views of Central Bohemia’s rolling hills and forests.

5. Letterpress Museum
Pressing your own letter the traditional way is a unique activity to do while you’re in Kutna Hora. I was honoured to have a fourth-generation printer show us how to press our own letters using traditional heavy machinery.
This 15th-century workshop offers visitors the chance to experience Central Bohemia’s traditional book printing process, as well as learn about Central Bohemia’s literary history.
There are also several exhibits that showcase Central Bohemia’s art and culture. This is an ideal destination for those looking to learn more about Central Bohemia’s history and culture.

6. Kačina Chateau

The Kačina Chateau is an amazing neoclassical-style chateau located on the edge of Central Bohemia. This estate offers plenty to explore, including its beautiful interior, gardens and park.
Be greeted by the Bohemia-style chandelier that weighs a whopping 500 kg. As you walk along the rooms, what strikes me most is the Viennese motifs on the ceiling.
Don’t miss the picturesque dome-shaped library.
The castle was built in 1822 and is set in a stunning landscaped garden full of exotic plants and flowers. There are also 2 ponds situated in the gardens and a central pavilion with a balcony view of the pond.
The beautiful chateau and its grounds can be admired from all angles, with plenty of things to explore in the area. Kačina Chateau hosts many events throughout the year that are worth attending if you happen to be visiting Central Bohemia at the right time.
I personally recommend the herb gardens, where you can learn about the medicinal and culinary uses of different herbs. You will be amazed at the beauty of this architecture and its remarkable gardens.

7. Malešov Medieval Fortress
Experience Central Bohemia’s rich history at the Malešov Medieval Fortress. This 13th-century castle is situated in Central Bohemia, south of Kutna Hora, overlooking a river and lush green fields.
It’s an impressive sight with its beautiful towers and soaring walls, just perfect for a day trip or an afternoon stroll.
The fortress has an exciting history that visitors can explore via guided tours. It has also been restored, giving visitors a glimpse of its former glory. I was very honoured to have the owner of the fortress himself show us around it.
The fortress is set in the picturesque countryside and offers stunning views, making it an ideal spot for a picnic with friends or family. Even better, they offer a glamping option, which I highly recommend! You’re surrounded by complete nature, and can always look forward to a warm fireplace in their restaurant.

Pro tip: Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the meals at their restaurant. It’s seriously so much goodness overflowing from every dish that they serve!

8. Malešov Craft Brewery
Close by, if you’re looking for a great night out in Central Bohemia, 17th-century Malešov Craft Brewery is the place to be. This brewery offers a unique experience with its interactive guided tours and beer tastings. You can learn about the brewing process or try some of their delicious craft beers such as lagers, IPAs, stouts, and more.
For instance, I learned that they first boil malt, and then add granulated hops in to be able to measure accurately the bitterness. If they’re making lager, then the lager has to be cooled to 8 degrees Celsius, whereas for ale, it’s cooled to 20 degrees Celsius before you throw yeast in to start the brewing process.
Lager takes 5 weeks to make, while ale requires a shorter period of 2-3 weeks.
Malešov Craft Brewery is a unique place to hang out and relax with friends or family, as well as a great spot for beer lovers. Its central location also makes it easily accessible from the rest of Central Bohemia, so you can make a day trip out of your visit!

9. Hillock of the St Bartholomew Cathedral
Over in the town of Kolín, For a breathtaking view of Central Bohemia, head to the hillock of the St Bartholomew Cathedral. This spectacular architecture can be admired from the hilltop, which offers a stunning panoramic view of Central Bohemia’s countryside and rolling hills.
You can also visit the impressive cathedral itself, featuring an array of architectural elements such as colourful stained glass windows and intricate sculptures.
The hillock of the St Bartholomew Cathedral is a great spot for sunsets, with its central location providing easy access from Central Bohemia.

10. Visit St Bartholomew Church with the belfry
If you’re looking for something a little different, visit St Bartholomew Church in Kolín. This 18th-century bell tower is situated in Central Bohemia’s countryside and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. It’s an impressive sight with its hexagonal shape and white stone walls that are decorated with some beautiful sculptures.
You can even climb up the tower’s staircase to admire Central Bohemia from an impressive height. This is a great spot for admiring Central Bohemia’s landscape and getting an amazing view of the Czech countryside.

Located in Central Bohemia’s second largest city, the Jewish Quarter of Pilsen is a must-see destination. This area has been preserved since the 19th century and features some incredible architecture as well as traditional Jewish culture. You can also visit various historical sites such as synagogues, cemeteries, and museums.
The Jewish Quarter of Pilsen offers a unique experience and is the perfect place to learn about Central Bohemia’s history and culture. You can even take part in traditional activities such as baking challah bread or attending Shabbat services.

Last but not least, don’t miss the herb and rose garden by the kirkyard in Central Bohemia. This stunning garden is a great spot for admiring Central Bohemia’s countryside and its colourful flower beds. The garden features some unique varieties of herbs and roses, as well as other plants that are native to Central Bohemia.
This is an ideal spot for relaxing and taking in Central Bohemia’s natural beauty. You can also purchase some of the garden’s herbs and roses to take home with you, making this spot a great option for souvenirs too.
