By 2 July 2024 December 1st, 2025 No Comments

Not sure where to stay in Medellin, Colombia? I’ve got you covered! As someone who has had the pleasure of calling this vibrant city home for a full month, I’m excited to share with you the best areas to stay in Medellin and accommodation options for all budgets.

Medellin is a rapidly growing city with a booming tourism industry, so it’s essential to book your stay in advance. The city’s popularity means the best spots fill up quickly. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on securing your ideal place!

El Poblado is my top recommendation for first-time visitors. This bustling district combines the conveniences of a big city with the charm of local immersion. It has trendy cafes, upscale restaurants, and lively nightlife. El Poblado is the best place to experience the best of Medellin.

But I know everyone’s travel tastes are different. So, I’ve included 4 more fantastic areas for you to consider. Each has a selection of hotels and apartments.

Are you looking for budget-friendly options or luxurious stays? I’ve picked accommodations with great reviews. They’re sorted by price to make planning your trip easy.

Where Is Medellin, Colombia

Medellin is located in the heart of Colombia, nestled in the Andes Mountains. It’s the capital of the Antioquia department. It’s known for its pleasant weather. This has earned it the nickname “City of Eternal Spring.”

Geographically, Medellin sits in the Aburrá Valley, approximately 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) above sea level. This elevation gives the city its mild climate, making it an attractive destination year-round.

To give you a better idea, Medellin is about 245 kilometres (152 miles) northwest of Bogota, the capital of Colombia. You can also explore Bogota via bus from Medellin. The city is well-connected by air and road, making it accessible and convenient for travellers from all over the world.

While Medellin is the heart of the action, don’t forget to explore the surrounding areas.

A short trip from the city, Guatapé offers colourful streets and the iconic El Peñol rock, perfect for a day trip or a relaxing weekend getaway.

For beach lovers, Santa Marta and the stunning island of San Andrés provide a tropical escape with plenty of accommodation options. And if you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Minca’s lush greenery and tranquil vibe, which I had the privilege to also visit during my 2 months in Bolivia, are just a few hours away.

Medellin has beautiful landscapes. It also has a rich culture and friendly locals. Because of this, it has become a must-visit in South America.
