As an avid traveller, I’m always on the lookout for hidden gems and secret spots away from the crowds. If you’re like me and want to escape the masses, here are a couple of my favourite off-the-beaten-path places to visit in September in the USA.
1. North Cascades National Park, Washington
If you’re looking for a true hidden gem in September, North Cascades National Park should be at the top of your list. After Labour Day, the crowds thin out, and you’ll get to enjoy the park’s stunning beauty in peace, with crisp fall air and the first hints of autumn colours creeping in.
I love kayaking here – there’s something magical about gliding across Diablo Lake’s turquoise waters, with golden larches lining the shores. If hiking is more your thing, the Maple Pass Loop is one of my favourites. You’ll be surrounded by snow-capped peaks, and the view of the golden larches is straight out of a postcard.
When you’re done exploring, head to Winthrop, a quirky little town with an old West vibe. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite or sample some craft beers after a day in the park.
September in North Cascades is the perfect mix of beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and breathtaking scenery. Definitely worth adding to your autumn travel list!
Location
2. Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier National Park is a perfect September escape. With the summer crowds gone, the fall colours starting to appear, and pleasant weather, it’s an ideal time for outdoor adventures.
The Highline Trail offers incredible views of glacial lakes and jagged peaks. Take a guided tour as the Hidden Lake trail offers a moderately challenging hike through lush cedar forests to an alpine lake. For a relaxed stroll, try the Trail of the Cedars, winding through ancient trees.
September is also prime time for wildlife spotting. As the crowds thin, animals like mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears become more active. Logan Pass and Many Glacier are great for spotting them.
Of course, the fall foliage here is breathtaking. Golden larches and vibrant aspens create a stunning scene, especially on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and in Many Glacier.
Location
3. Zion National Park, Utah
Take a self-driving audio guided tour to explore Zion at your own pace, where you can marvel at the towering sandstone cliffs like the Great White Throne and Checkerboard Mesa without the crowds.
For an unforgettable adventure, hike the Narrows. This slot canyon trail takes you up the Virgin River, with towering canyon walls and incredible morning light filtering through the narrow gap. Be ready to get wet, and aim to go in early September before the fall flash floods begin.
Another must-see is the Emerald Pools trail, leading to lower and upper pools surrounded by cliffs, waterfalls, and stunning autumn colours from the aspen trees.
Zion in September is quieter, with comfortable temperatures and vibrant fall scenery – an ideal place for those looking to experience nature in peace. If you need a break from the crowds, this hidden gem will leave you with memories to cherish.
Location
4. Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are 2 of my favourite places to visit in September. The summer crowds are gone, and the fall colours start to pop, making it the perfect time to enjoy these stunning spots in peace.
In Grand Teton, the towering snow-capped peaks mirror in the crystal-clear lakes, and wildlife like moose and grizzly bears are out and about. Yellowstone’s geothermal wonders, like the Grand Prismatic Spring and Old Faithful, are just as incredible without the usual throngs of people. And let’s not forget the gorgeous fall foliage – the contrast of golden aspen leaves against the volcanic landscapes is something special.
Plus, with fewer tourists around, accommodation is more affordable, and you can take your time soaking in all the views without worrying about traffic or crowds. If you’re looking for a tranquil escape surrounded by epic landscapes and wildlife, this is your spot.
5. The White Mountains, New Hampshire
Come September, the summer crowds have dwindled in New England, but the weather is still pleasant and the fall foliage is starting to emerge. This is one of my favourite times of year to explore this picturesque region.
The White Mountains offer stunning vistas of autumn colours against a backdrop of granite peaks. Take a scenic drive down the Kancamagus Highway, stopping at roadside pull-offs to snap photos of the fiery red and gold leaves.
For an easy hike with panoramic views, head to Arethusa Falls or Mount Pemigewasset. The crisp air and peaceful solitude make it a perfect escape from the bustle of everyday life.
After hiking, cosy up by a fireplace in a secluded mountain lodge-like The Notchland Inn. Or sample farm-fresh cuisine in a small town like Lincoln, where seasonal menus feature harvest fare like apples, squash, and pumpkins. A cider tasting at a local orchard is a must.
The summer crowds may have left, but New England’s natural beauty dazzles in the fall. Trade the beaches for the mountains and experience the region’s quieter, cosier side. The White Mountains offer an idyllic setting to unwind surrounded by autumn’s vibrant show.
6. The Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, spanning Tennessee and North Carolina, is an 800-square-mile haven of lush forest. September offers a peaceful escape with fewer crowds and the first hints of autumn’s vibrant colours.
There are over 800 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging. I recommend the Chimney Tops Trail for panoramic views of the misty mountains, or the quieter Middle Prong Trail along a mossy creek. For an easy hike, Clingmans Dome, the park’s highest point at 6,643 feet, offers a 1/2 mile trail to the top.
Wildlife thrives here, and you’re likely to spot black bears, deer, turkeys, and even bobcats. September is also prime time to see the synchronous fireflies—watching thousands of them flash together is magical. A guided tour will help you find the best spots.
The park is full of stunning waterfalls, like Mingo Falls and Toms Creek Falls. You can also go boating on Fontana Lake, surrounded by serene woods. Stay in a secluded cabin and enjoy the peace on your porch swing.
With mild weather, autumn colours, and fewer visitors, September is the perfect time to experience the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains.
7. Olympic National Park, Washington
In the Pacific Northwest, head to Olympic National Park in Washington. This stunning park is massive, covering nearly a million acres, so it’s easy to avoid tourists.
One of my top picks is the Staircase region, with its old-growth rainforests, waterfalls and the North Fork Skokomish River. You might spot black bears, bobcats or Roosevelt elk if you’re lucky!
Location
8. Congaree National Park, South Carolina
Down south, Congaree National Park in South Carolina is a perfect escape. This lush floodplain forest is home to some of the tallest trees in the eastern U.S.
Go canoeing or kayaking along Cedar Creek, hike the boardwalks at dusk when the heat has faded, and camp under a canopy of stars.
Location
9. Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is known for its bright lights, endless entertainment, and vibrant nightlife. While the glitz and glam are entertaining, I prefer the natural wonders surrounding this neon oasis.
Red Rock Canyon State Park
Just a 30-minute drive from the Strip, Red Rock Canyon State Park is a perfect escape from the city. Massive red sandstone formations, hiking trails for all skill levels, and desert scenery make this a favourite spot for outdoor recreation.
The 13-mile scenic drive offers panoramic views from the comfort of your car. For a more rugged experience, there are over 20 miles of hiking trails to discover.
Location
Valley Of Fire State Park
About an hour north of Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park contains breathtaking red Aztec sandstone formations and petrified wood. It’s one of the best places to see a sunset, with the rock formations glowing bright orange as the sun dips below the horizon.
There are hiking trails, campsites, and picnic areas throughout the park. Pack a lunch, bring your camera, and spend a day exploring this geologic wonderland.
Location
Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina is one of my favourite places to escape the crowds in September. This scenic byway winds through the Appalachian Mountains, with stunning vistas of rolling hills and foggy valleys.
My must-see stops include:
- Peaks of Otter for panoramic views of 3 mountain peaks rising up from a pristine lake. There are short hiking trails to the summits and boat rentals on the lake.
- Mabry Mill, a historic gristmill where you can watch millers in action with stone-ground cornmeal and buckwheat pancakes.
- Cumberland Knob, the parkway’s starting point in North Carolina with an easy hike to the summit.
10. San Francisco, California
San Francisco is one of my favourite cities to visit in September. The summer crowds have dwindled, the fog is lifting, and the city is waking up after a long summer.
Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is stunning in September. The park is blanketed in a sea of orange and red leaves, and the summer fog has mostly burned off, leaving bright blue skies.
Head to Stow Lake to rent a boat, or just stroll around taking in the autumn colours. On Sundays, check out the roller skaters at 6th Ave & JFK Drive.
Location
Fisherman’s Wharf
Fisherman’s Wharf is way more pleasant in September without the usual throngs of tourists. Grab some clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, watch the sea lions basking in the sun at Pier 39, and catch a street performer or two.
The Wharf has a really festive vibe in September as the city gears up for Fleet Week and Halloween.
Location
Cable Cars
The Powell-Hyde cable car line is a fun way to see the city in September. The smaller crowds mean you can usually get a spot on the running board to take in the views. Hop on at Powell & Market, ride over Nob Hill, and end near Ghirardelli Square for some hot fudge sundaes.
September is one of the best months to experience San Francisco without big crowds and warm summer weather. Pack a light jacket, rent a bike, and go explore the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods, stunning vistas and world-class cuisine. The summer haze has cleared, and the city sparkles once again.
11. Port Royal Island, South Carolina
Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s hidden gems, is where I’ve spent many quiet weekends soaking in its natural beauty and rich history without the crowds.
Miles of undeveloped beaches line the island’s coast. My favourite spots are near Battery Creek and Station Creek, where soft white sand and sea oats create a timeless vibe. Dolphins often play just offshore, and if you’re looking for solitude, arrive early to claim your spot.
The Gullah people have lived here for centuries, and their culture is woven into the local arts, food, and language. To experience it firsthand, visit St. Helena Island and the Penn Centre, a significant civil rights landmark. Don’t miss tasting Gullah Grub dishes like okra gumbo and fried shrimp.
Port Royal Island’s waterways are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Rent some gear and explore the winding trails, paddling under moss-draped oaks. You might spot egrets, otters, or even alligators. Along the shorelines, you’ll find the ruins of old rice plantations and forts, adding a historical touch to your adventure.
12. Waterfront Park, Portland, Oregon
Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon, is one of my favourite hidden gems. This urban oasis stretches along the Willamette River, offering scenic walking and biking paths with stunning views of the city skyline.
In September, the summer crowds have thinned out, but the weather remains lovely. I love renting a bike and leisurely cycling around the park loop, pausing to snap pictures of the Hawthorne Bridge and watch rowing teams glide across the river.
The park also hosts the Portland Saturday Market, where you can discover unique handmade crafts by local artisans. Just across the river, the International Rose Test Garden is still beautiful in September, with the last blooms filling the air with fragrance. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic with some warm apple cider.
As the evening sets in, head to the Eastbank Esplanade for a casual dinner from local food carts like Viking Soul Food or Whole Bowl. Grab a spot on the grass and enjoy the sunset, then take a peaceful stroll along the riverwalk—it’s open until midnight.
Location
13. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast is the perfect September getaway. With the summer crowds gone, accommodation rates drop, and the ocean stays warm enough for swimming.
After Labour Day, the boardwalks and attractions quiet down, giving you more space to enjoy the wide sandy beaches and grab a spot at one of the beach bars or restaurants. The pace is much more relaxed without the summer rush.
The beach is still stunning, with ocean temperatures around 77°F, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or trying out activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, or beach yoga. While September is hurricane season, the weather is often fantastic once storms pass, leaving behind clear blue skies.
Accommodation rates drop by up to 50% after Labour Day, so it’s a great time to grab a deal on a beach resort, house, or condo. While some attractions may have shorter hours, live music, golf, shopping, and dining options remain open, along with local events like Beach Bike Week, the South Carolina Pecan Festival, and food and craft beer festivals.
14. Wine Country In Sonoma, California
One hidden gem for a September getaway is Sonoma County in Northern California. This scenic area is known for its world-class vineyards, farm-to-table dining, and outdoor adventures.
Sonoma boasts over 425 wineries, including gems like Gundlach Bundschu, California’s oldest family-run winery, and St. Francis Winery, which has a beautiful tasting room and expansive vineyards.
For a more laid-back experience, visit smaller, family-owned wineries off the beaten path. You’ll often get a personal chat with the winemakers while sampling their wines. When you’re not tasting, you can enjoy hiking, biking, or kayaking on the Russian River, surrounded by towering redwoods.
Sonoma offers a serene wine country experience without the usual crowds. It’s the perfect fall getaway!
15. Santa Fe, New Mexico
When I visited Santa Fe, I headed straight to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre to learn about the native Puebloan peoples.
The museum, owned by New Mexico’s 19 Pueblos, offers a fascinating look at their history, traditions, and art. I spent hours exploring artefacts, pottery demonstrations, and even made blue corn tortillas by hand.
It’s the perfect place to gain a deeper understanding of Puebloan culture, both past and present.
Location
The Badlands Of South Dakota
September is a fantastic time to visit the Badlands, with its golden prairies and rugged peaks free from the crowds. I love hiking the backcountry, where I’ve spotted bighorn sheep and prairie dogs.
The stargazing is incredible here too – the Milky Way looks like something out of a dream.
Location
The Berkshires In Western Massachusetts
Autumn arrives early in the Berkshires, with the rolling hills exploding in oranges and reds. I head here to meander country lanes, shop for antiques, and catch a show at the historic Colonial Theatre.
The throngs of summer visitors have dwindled, so I can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Housatonic River or a picnic in the tranquil grounds of the Norman Rockwell Museum.
The San Juan Islands Of Washington State
Whale-watching season lasts until October in the San Juan Islands, and the ferry rides to these rugged isles are blissfully uncrowded. I like to go sea kayaking, beachcombing for shells and driftwood, or just find a secluded cove to curl up with a book.
The lodges offer great shoulder season deals, and the local fare – think fresh seafood, craft ciders, and homemade pie – is delicious. A perfect Pacific Northwest escape!
Location
16. The Finger Lakes, New York
Nestled in upstate New York, the Finger Lakes offer a tranquil escape surrounded by picturesque gorges, waterfalls and wineries. The summer tourists have headed home, so you can leisurely explore the area’s natural beauty and world-class Rieslings without the crowds.
Stay in a cosy bed and breakfast, go hiking in one of the region’s many state parks, or simply sit back and enjoy the changing leaves reflected in the deep blue lakes.
Location
17. Cedar Key, Florida
For a taste of Old Florida, head to the tiny Gulf Coast town of Cedar Key. Once a thriving port city, Cedar Key now moves at a snail’s pace.
Rent a bike or golf cart and explore the historic downtown, dine on fresh seafood along the docks as the sun sets over the marsh, or charter a boat to one of the secluded barrier islands.
The summer heat and storms have passed, but the water is still warm enough for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Cedar Key offers a perfect beach getaway without the crowds in September.
18. Mount Desert Island, Maine
New England shines in September, especially Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park in Maine. The summer tourists and their RVs have left, letting you enjoy the rugged coastline, historic carriage roads and Cadillac Mountain in relative solitude.
Go whale watching, soak in the view of the harbour from Bar Harbour, or hike through forests of red, gold and orange in the autumn air. Wrap up your days with a cup of chowder or a lobster roll as a fire crackles nearby. Bliss.
