WESTGATE Hotel Taipei, Taiwan – Hotel Review

By 28 December 2016 January 24th, 2024 No Comments

Taipei is a city of food. There are tons of things to do in the city and while looking for a place to stay in Taipei, we narrowed our search to Ximending, since it’s well-known for the labyrinth of streets for shopping and late-night food stalls.

WESTGATE Hotel presented itself the perfect accommodation choice, being right in the heart of Ximending. Being the only property in Taiwan, 4-year-old WESTGATE Hotel’s facilities are clean, modern and comfortable.

We were pleased at the promptness of our correspondence with WESTGATE via email, which made our reservation a breeze.

Checking in to WESTGATE Hotel

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei reception

Upon entering the reception, we were greeted by a bell boy offering to carry our luggages up to our rooms.

Check in was fuss-free; the receptionists were swift, and provided every one of us with individual access cards to our room. The reception operates 24 hours. Check in is at 3pm and check out is at 12pm.

Do note that there are no pick up/ drop off points, so taxis can only drop you off on the main road in front of the hotel.

WESTGATE Hotel’s modernity extends to the lift, where each guest only has specific access to their own floors. This, however, posed a hassle for us as we had 2 rooms situated on different floors and it was impossible to access the other room.

WESTGATE Hotel’s Room

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei Premier Double Room

There are 9 Executive Suites and 9 Grand Suites across the 11 levels in Westgate Hotel. Room types range from single occupancy to a maximum of 4 people per room, as with most hotels/ minsus in Taiwan.

Evidently, Taiwan truly is a family destination. Room prices range from SGD 140 to SGD 237 per night.

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei toiletries

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei toilet

We were slightly taken aback at the configuration of the room when we first stepped in. The room, while typical of most hotel rooms, has its sink directly in the walkway between the entrance and the bed.

It was delightful to receive their small welcoming gesture of complimentary pineapple tarts, a specialty in Taiwan.

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei sink

I liked how the mirror to the sink revolves 360 degrees, which makes it extremely convenient whether you want to doll up from your bed or remove your contact lenses at the sink.

Apart from the mirror by the sink, a full-length mirror can also be found in the wardrobe, which has ample space for hanging clothes. In addition, bathrobes and a safety deposit box are also provided.

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei shower

Fancy shower!

Now this is where it gets interesting. While most showers would provide a shower head and at the very most, a rain shower, Westgate Hotel’s shower has 5 functions – a shower head, a rain shower, a nozzle that spills water like waterfall from the top, nozzles that spill water from chest height and even one that spills from the bottom from waist height! Strange as it sounds, I very much had fun toggling through these 5 different functions while showering, while hearing my occasional exclamations in the shower.

The king-size bed can easily fit 3 people, and was everything we needed after a long day of shopping. 2 pillows are provided per person, which is useful, since the pillows sink deep when compressed that it takes 2 pillows to prop my head up.

The Grand Suite, on the other hand, has additional space for a couch and coffee table, and their toilet comes with a bathtub. The Grand Suite and Executive Suite rooms are essentially bigger than the other room types. They also have a Nescafe capsule.

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei buffet breakfast

Buffet breakfast is provided complimentary for every guest from 7am to 10:30am. The buffet at WESTGATE  includes both Western and Chinese dishes, such as salads, fruits, desserts, porridge, buns and the usual toast and cornflakes.

While the selection was more than my tummy could conceivably take, I found the Chinese dishes to be somewhat too oily.

WiFi is also complimentary throughout the property, with each room having their own set of WiFi password.

WESTGATE Hotel’s Location

WESTGATE Hotel Taipei entrance

The best part of WESTGATE Hotel has got to be its close proximity to Ximen station at Ximending. It faces the main road, hence making it a breeze to locate their property. We simply had to step out of Exit 6 and it is no more than 2-minute walk away.

When we were feeling hungry, we could easily order ourselves a bowl of piping hot Ah Zhong Mee Sua within 5 minutes of leaving the hotel, one of the famous stalls to visit when visiting Taipei.

While the view from our hotel room was not the best, this was overlooked by the fact that it is one of the hotels that are most prominent, given the mishmash of shops and hotels in Ximending. Do not be fooled by the modest reception space – the rooms are spacious enough for a comfortable night to wind down from the hustle and bustle of touring Taipei off the beaten path!
