How To Get From Paris To Mont Saint Michel, France

By 12 February 2015 June 23rd, 2025 No Comments

Mont Saint Michel is a very famous tidal island located about 1 kilometre off the country’s northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches in Normandy, France.

Its spread is 7 hectares and the mainland part of the commune is 393 hectares in the area, making the total surface of the commune 400 hectares.

Mont Saint Michel is circular and consists of a granite outcrop that is rising sharply out of Mont Saint Michel Bay, which makes this Paris to Mont Saint Michel day trip so worth it.

Before the 3,000-foot causeway was constructed that connects the island to land, it was pretty difficult to reach because of quicksand and very fast-rising tides.

The causeway has unfortunately become a barrier to the removal of material by the tides ever since, resulting in higher sandbanks between the islet and the coast.

Why visit Mont Saint Michel, France?

Paris to mont saint Michel, franceIt would be really hard to pick one thing to describe what makes Mont Saint Michel a special place.

Be it its location, the marvellous spires brushing the sky, the Bay of Mont St. Michel across which pilgrims used to make the arduous journey to visit the chapel by foot during low tide or the abbey, everything is so intriguing, which is what makes this attraction so sought after.

Mont St. Michel has an interior all adorned with arches and cloisters. Maybe it’s all of that and more that makes this religious and military masterpiece one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places in the whole wide world!

One point that you should note here is the time of the day you choose to visit this place decides how much you can discover. You’ll either be welcomed by a low tide and exposed sands or a high tide with the abbey jutting dramatically out of the sea. Either way, it’s a sight for sore eyes.

Mont Saint Michel’s tides

tide, mont saint Michel day trip from Paris, franceNow, we can’t discuss Mont Saint Michel without giving an overview on the Mont Saint Michel high tides associated with its name.

As we all know, tides are usually caused by the action of the heavenly bodies, the sun and the moon. When they are in line with the earth, the attraction is multiplied, and in announcing spring tides, this coincides with the period of highest tides.

On the other hand, if the sun and the moon form a right angle, the attraction is reduced and we are in neap tides, which are the period of lowest tidal movements.

The big flood of more than 12.85-metre-high water level takes place 6 to 7 times a year. That is when Mont Saint-Michel is bathed with water and becomes an island.

The highest tides in continental Europe take place at Mont Saint Michel, with up to 15 metres difference between low and high water tides.

In order to observe the phenomenon of the rising tide, you must be present 2 hours before the times indicated on spring tide days.

With a private walking tour, you can have access to full information about an attraction and its history is what makes you relax and just enjoy what’s coming – totally hassle-free!

The big disadvantage of not having a guide is that you may miss out on some exciting secrets of the Abbey. A guide always knows what parts of the Abbey cannot be missed, what information and history you should know and why any attraction is worth it.

2. Safety

A major concern of every person travelling to a new place. Someone who is knowledgeable about the location can ensure extra safety by advising against anything that may seem unsafe.

3. Skip the line

What’s worse than spending your holiday queueing in line with the hundreds of other tourists, jostling to get into the attraction? That’s why I always like to buy skip-the-line tickets by ordering in advance online

4. Make friends

Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends or family, it’s always nice to meet other travellers who share the same interests as you do. On a guided tour from Paris to Mont Saint Michel, chances to meet other like-minded travellers increases.

What to do at Mont Saint Michel, France

Mont Saint Michel has a special place in the hearts of the French, because of its architectural and symbolic significance, as well as the cultural and historic importance of the Abbey.

This island was originally called Mont Tombe but became famously known as Mont Saint Michel in the 8th century. It was when St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, built an oratory there when they had a vision of the archangel Saint Michael.

It was partially burned when King Philip II of France tried to capture the mount in 1203.

The regular admission ticket is €9 and free for students.
